The historical center travels in time with the Baroque Market (03/11/2017)

Cartagena travels in time this weekend hand in hand with the Baroque Market.

Between this Friday 3 November and Sunday 5 the Old Town of the city will move to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries through the more than 120 stalls selling handicrafts and vintage, of which 25 correspond to local businesses, and of the animation activities programmed throughout the three days that will last.

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, this Friday inaugurated this fair accompanied by the Councilor for Quality of Life, Francisco Calderón, the Councilor for Public Safety, Francisco Aznar, the Councilor for Tourism, Obdulia Gómez, the Councilor Delegate for Social Services and Social Mediation, Carmen Martín del Amor, and the director of Piramide Art, the entity responsible for its assembly, Soledad Pérez.

Visitors and citizens from Cartagena who attend the Baroque Market all weekend can enjoy multiple activities designed for the public of all ages such as theater, soldiers parades, dances, story-telling, parades of masks, and many more activities in charge of five companies of dance, theater and children's entertainment.

Also, the Napoleonic Association of Valencia will make several historical recreations in which will bring a Tercio de Lombardia formed by drum, captain and four soldiers who will tour the streets of the market and make a school of soldiers for the little ones.

Turdión Músicos, Charon arabesques, Entre Juglares, Saltimpumqui and Disparatorio will also perform.

For the little ones there will also be didactic games, puppet theater, makeup, mimes, magic games, a carousel, a merry-go-round and a boat.

The first mayor of the city has highlighted in his visit the atmosphere that already enjoyed this appointment as well as the "joy that will flood this weekend the streets of downtown Cartagena."

Castejón has underlined the "double objective" that is sought with the organization of this event, which is "to make Cartagena known" and how the port city "is adorned with the different activities of the different councils".

Also, Ana Belén Castejón has highlighted the boost for tourism and the image of the city that means that this vintage market coincides with the arrival of two cruise ships.

"More than 5,000 tourists will be able to stay enthralled not only of the architectural and cultural beauty of Cartagena but also of how we do not stop innovating and working so that on weekends, where families have more free time, they can enjoy", said the mayor, who considers that this fair is "a perfect excuse to come this weekend to Cartagena to this Baroque Market."

Carmen Martín, meanwhile, stressed that "the fundamental objective" of this initiative "is to promote coexistence and social cohesion in the Casco Antiguo".

On the other hand, in relation to the influx of public, the mayor of Social Services has said that expectations are very good.

"We think that we are going to overcome even the visitors that were there last year," said the councilor.

The Baroque Market will have, on the other hand, the installation of two exhibitions.

One of them will be a costume show of the time that will be available in two tents in the Plaza de San Francisco, accompanied by furniture and explanatory panels.

On Cuatro Santos Street, arriving at the intersection with Palas Street, there will be an exhibition of illustrative sheets on the biographies of the main painters and sculptors of the time, such as Caravaggio, Velázquez or Bernini, among others.

As an activity parallel to the Baroque Market, a quick painting competition and another one of artistic photography, directed by Cristina San Pedro, have also been organized.

The registration to both competitions may be formalized in a position located in the market.

The quick painting competition will take place on Saturday, November 4 from 11:00.

In addition, a bobbin meeting of different associations of Cartagena has been organized and there will be another 16 demonstration workshops of traditional trades such as blacksmithing, macramé, leather, basketry, bakery or glass blowing.

Between the posts there will be Galician, German and Arab taverns.

The market will be located in San Diego Street, La Merced Square, Duque Street, Risueño Square, Serreta Street, San Ginés Square, Cuatro Santos Street, San Francisco Street and Plaza, and Palas Street.
