The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Javier Celdrán, today held a working meeting with the director of the Repsol refinery in Cartagena, Juan Antonio Carrillo de Albornoz, and his management team, which addressed the joint work of control and improvement of air quality.
In this regard, Repsol is investing 60 million euros in its Escombreras complex to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 420,000 tons.
Celdrán met first hand the Oil Emission Reduction Plan of the oil company, in which the Cartagena refinery is a key element.
The objective is to achieve a greater reduction of 35 percent in 2020 compared to 2010, a percentage that translates into almost 500,000 tons less CO2 emissions.
Repsol's investment will result in 136 improvement actions and efficiency of processes and equipment, resulting in the lowest energy consumption of the installation.
In 2017, about 9 million euros were budgeted for the development of the CO2 Reduction Plan, which will be used to replace equipment with more energy efficient ones.
These measures have allowed to reduce the energy consumption per barrel processed by 20 percent.
Celdrán highlighted "the work and involvement of Repsol and the Cartagena refinery with the Region in all areas and, in this case, with the environment.
Repsol is a model of always looking for the highest efficiency, also in environmental matters ".
