Last week, the councilor of the Culture and Heritage area, Ricardo Segado, together with the councilor of the Government, José López, the municipal coordinator of Historical and Archaeological Heritage, Mari Carmen Berrocal, and the general coordinator of Sustainable Development, Jesús Giménez, They moved to the Monastery of San Ginés de la Jara to check, on the ground, the status of the work being carried out for the restoration of the emblematic monumental complex.
With the visit made, the areas of Culture and Heritage and Sustainable Development gave continuity to the monitoring and follow-up work they have been doing, knowing periodically the progress made in the recovery work of this significant enclave of Cartagena's heritage.
Thus, during the last weeks, different tasks have been carried out, such as the execution of brick factories perforated in walls in the east bay and in the closure of the west bay;
the reinforcement of the East façade and the existing buttress;
the realization of a structure of slabs and slabs in the east bay;
wall lining works with bastard mortar;
as well as the waterproofing of the roofs of the patio area and the southern corridor.
Similarly, progress has been made in waterproofing the sloping roofs of the cloister area through the placement of self-protected asphalt sheet.
Finally, we proceeded to the roofing with curved ceramic tile of the patio and south crunch, which has allowed it to begin to acquire its traditional physiognomy.
All these actions have been developed at the time of the inspections maintained by the archaeological supervision.
After the visit, Ricardo Segado said that "it is very satisfying to see that the work carried out continues to bear fruit and that we are continuing to move towards the recovery of a heritage asset of enormous value.
The progress is already significant.
We are pleased to see how the Monastery begins to resemble itself, although obviously there is a long way to go. "
"We also think about the future and the usefulness that we are going to give to this monumental complex.
We are excited and convinced to be able to turn it into a space where different proposals coexist at the same time ", concluded the mayor.
COMPATIBLE USES
Parallel to the recovery work of the Monastery of San Ginés de la Jara, the possible uses to be given are studied, being willing to devote it to questions of public utility.
Thus, a high-quality site would be put into community service, capable of hosting different activities simultaneously, allocating more than 1,400 meters for stays.
Future that could focus on the adaptation of a Interpretation Center of the Comarca to deepen the rich environmental heritage that welcomes this area nestled between the Sierra de Cartagena and the Mar Menor.
It would be in charge of giving greater visibility to a privileged environment, focusing on its evolution and historical journey.
This activity will be compatible with other initiatives, such as university education, the holding of congresses, conferences, scientific meetings, etc.
