The cycle of talks "Science and Technology in Cartagena de la Enlightenment" began yesterday, October 19, with the keynote speech of Carlos López Fernández, a graduate in Physical Sciences from the University of Valencia and doctor from the University of Saragossa.
The Pedreño Palace, headquarters of the Cajamurcia Cultural Center, will host until November 30 these presentations in which aspects of that era will be brought closer to those who "opened with it the doors of a more developed modern world", explained the councilman of culture, David Martinez, in the presentation prior to the talk.
The aim of the course, whose theme coincides with the Year of the Enlightenment in Cartagena, is to show "how science and technology transformed Cartagena and what scientific institutions stood out at that time", summarizes Juan Francisco López, coordinator of the cycle, who will be speaker of a talk about the Academy of Midshipmen.
"It is surprising the level of knowledge in mathematics, astronomy and navigation of the officers trained in Cartagena.
They were in the international vanguard and their study plans were exported to Ferrol and Cadiz, "he says.
"The influence of public works of the eighteenth century is still very evident today in Cartagena and is triggered by the construction of the Arsenal, an impressive engineering work," exclaims the professor of the Polytechnic.
"Cartagena is celebrating in 2017 that 301 years ago King Charles III was born, one of the most representative figures of the Spanish Enlightenment. During his reign, the defensive system of our city was completed with many and varied constructions such as the Wall of the Sea, the artillery barracks, and the castles of Galeras, Atalaya, Los Moros and San Julián, and the military arsenal was completed, "explained the councilman, who wanted to highlight the figure of the enlightened monarch.
