Cartagena paid homage this Thursday to those killed in the sinking of the Mercedes (06/10/2017)

Cartagena celebrated on Thursday, October 5, the IV Homage to those who died in the sinking of the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes Frigate, on the occasion of the 213 anniversary of the sinking of the vessel, with an act that included the discovery of a plaque and a conference by the director of the National Museum of Underwater Archeology of Cartagena (ARQUA), Ivan Negueruela.

The Councilor for Industry and Tourism, Obdulia Gómez;

the mayor of the municipal government, José López;

and the councilors of political groups with municipal representation Manuel Padín, Fernando Sáenz de Elorrieta and Ana Rama, in addition to several military authorities.

During the event, which began on the esplanade of the Port in Cartagena, the plaque was installed that has been installed in the Plaza del ARQUA that pays homage and remembers the more than 300 people who died in the event.

After this presentation, the conference on the third expedition of excavation of the wreck took place, in which the director of the ARQUA explained to the assistants how the expedition was developed, that took place during the month of August in collaboration with the Spanish Institute Oceanography, the Higher Council for Scientific Research and the Navy, and in what state the research on the sunken vessel is.

Thus, according to Negueruela, this year's expedition has made it possible to recover several pieces of exceptional documentary interest, such as a bronze faucet, a copper plate pierced as a vent and three bronze pulleys with scraps of wood to be analyzed.

In addition, the archaeological campaign has fulfilled the objective of expanding the knowledge of the wreck, mainly of the state of conservation of the materials and their evolution;

to register the dispersion of the remains of the frigate, to continue the positioning of all the archaeological remains and to advance in the interpretation and analysis of the ship.

In that sense, surveys of extensive areas to the east and north-west of the wreck have been carried out with a sonar of lateral sweeping, and studies of bathymetry and fund drilling have been carried out, allowing to complete the cartography of the area of ​​the deposit.

With these acts, one more year, tribute is paid to those who died in the sinking of the frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes by an English squadron, although Spain and England had signed in 1802 the Peace of Amiens.

More than 250 civilians and 60 Marines were killed in the attack.

The Arqua is, since 2014 and by decision of the Ministry of Culture, in charge of guarding and spreading the recovered of the shipwreck of the frigate.
