THE FESTIVAL
The official program will begin on Friday, November 3 with performances by Luisa Sobral and Dee Dee Bridgewater.
Sobral was released in our country in 2011, with a performance within the Cartagena Jazz Festival at the New Circus Theater, which will host it in this edition, where he presented his first work 'The Cherry on my Cake'.
Six years later, he is already presenting his fourth album, recorded under the tutelage of renowned Californian producer Joe Henry.
For the lovers of the songs Luisa Sobral already occupied an important space, now the great public knows it after composing for its brother Salvador Sobral the triumphant song of Eurovision 2017 "Love for two".
Behind her, Dee Dee Bridgewater, one of the lead vocalists of the current scene, will be on the stage.
She is, without doubt, one of the most energetic and relevant voices of jazz, queen of mestizaje and improvisation.
In addition, on Friday, November 10, the historic pianist Chick Corea and the great drummer Steve Gadd will join the Batel stage.
Korea is a pianist, composer and band leader;
the fourth most nominated artist in the history of the Grammy Awards with 22 awards of 63 nominations, in addition to Latin Grammys.
For his part, Steve Gadd is one of the most influential drummers in contemporary music, considered one of the 10 best batteries in the world.
In Cartagena these two geniuses will make a repertoire that will review the joint work of both artists, accompanied by Lionel Loueke on guitar, Steven Wilson on sax and flutes, Carlitos Del Puerto on bass and Luisito Quintero on percussion.
A day later, on Saturday 11, it will be the turn for Jay Jay Johanson and Jose James.
It's been almost 20 years since Swedish singer / songwriter Jay Jay Johanson made his name known, and he still has an innate facility for melodies, a caressing voice and compositions full of intoxicating and evocative beats that raise his songs from the subtle to the sublime.
At the Cartagena Jazz Festival will present his latest album Looking Glass II.
After him, it will be the turn of José James, one of the pampered singers of the festival, who on this occasion will present his latest work Love in a Time of Madness, a disc that bets on a luminous and at times danceable sound, plagued by urban rhythms mixed with soul, without moving away from jazz.
On the other hand, those considered the most important musical revelation of this 2017 in Spain, Maria Arnal and Marcel Bagès, will be in Cartagena on November 17.
Together they update the song, combine Spanish and Catalan, own and foreign subjects, and incorporate into their project the rescue of field recordings and digitized files belonging to different fonotecas throughout the country.
After them, the Brazilian pianist, composer and vocalist Eliane Elias will appear on stage at Nuevo Teatro Circo. In March of this year she released her new album Dance of Time, where she pays homage to Brazilian jazz and samba, a celebration for the centenary of the samba with which he returns to Cartagena.
On Saturday, November 18 will be the turn for Cyrille Aimée and Concha Buika, also in the New Circus Theater.
The French has become one of the new voices that has illuminated the jazz scene of recent years with its naturalness, freshness and personality.
It is presented for the first time in Cartagena with his latest album Let's Get Lost.
For her part, Concha Buika returns to the port city with For me, her last job where she proves again that she has talent and pedigree.
Already in the final stretch of the festival, on Friday 24, Michael Nyman returns to Cartagena accompanied by his band and to celebrate his 40 years in music.
Responsible for the application of the term minimalism for the first time in music and creator of the iconic soundtrack of El Piano, Nyman remains among the most fascinating musical icons of our time.
The rhythm will flood the night of the closing of the festival, Saturday 25 of November, with Zenet and Roberto Fonseca.
And is that Zenet has successfully braided the language of jazz, the Latin sound universe and the resonance of the music of half the world and comes to Cartagena to present If it happens, it is convenient, a job in which you leave your comfort zone and undertake new roads accompanied by new rhythms and new genres.
Behind him will be the turn of the Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca, who comes to present Abuc.
The title is an anagram of Cuba, as if the disc was a trip in time, through the musical eras that have marked the island.
Fonseca, who is considered one of the best pianists of the moment, will show the best he knows how to do, a jazz fused with Cuban popular music.
RENOM FESTIVAL AT NATIONAL LEVEL
Francisco Martin recalled that in the Observatory of Culture 2017, published by the Contemporary Foundation, which produces a ranking of the most outstanding cultural institutions and events of 2016 national panorama and by autonomous communities, noted the Cartagena Jazz Festival as the second best festival of the Region behind La Mar de Músicas.
A great achievement considering its budget of around 200,000 euros, very far from other major festivals at the national level, and even regional.
An importance that has corroborated Lopez Briones, who has indicated that this festival is already "in the collective imagination as a must for all inhabitants of the Region of Murcia and even outside."
He has also thanked Martin for making possible such a quality programming, which has highlighted Michael Nyman as a myth of jazz music.
For his part, the councilman wanted all music lovers to travel to Cartagena, "live it, discover it" and enjoy the city as a "cultural focus during the month of November."
