Caritas Cartagena will open on Saturday, September 23, its Sagrada Familia low-level reception center, which will assist, accompany and promote homeless people in the city, with the collaboration of the City of Cartagena.
The 400-square-meter facility, staffed by five workers and volunteers, will be inaugurated at 11:30 am by the bishop, José Manuel Lorca Planes, with the assistance of Juan Pedro Torralba, the mayor of Cartagena, and the councilors of Quality of Life, Francisco Calderón, and of Social Services, Carmen Martín;
in addition to the Caritas delegate in Cartagena, Francisco Montesinos.
It is a temporary residence center located on Miguel Unamuno Street and where people can access on their own initiative, by deriving Caritas in their street work or by referral from the public administration, other social entities or bodies of security such as the National Police or the Local Police.
Being a center of low demand, it simply requires that there are no aggressions or situations of significant conflict, and also the beneficiaries of the reception will have the option to freely dispose of their time and circulate at their discretion.
It will have a capacity for 10 people and there will be three additional places that will be reserved for specific emergencies.
It will open every day in the evening, from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and will remain operational until the morning.
The team that will be part of the contracted staff will also try to meet their basic needs in terms of food and hygiene.
The project was presented last July by Mayor Ana Belén Castejón, along with Bishop Jose Manuel Lorca and the Director General of Social Policies of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, Míriam Pérez.
Ana Belén Castejón then showed the necessary support of the City Council to the project to facilitate the full integration of the most disadvantaged people.
He also stressed the effort of the municipal government team to improve the quality of life of all neighbors, neighbors and bystanders, who in two years has managed to get fifty people out of the street thanks to campaigns such as' 'in collaboration with Cáritas, the' Homeless Summer School 'or the rehabilitation of social housing.
