The City Council will launch a commission to monitor the pact against poverty and social exclusion. In addition, it will try to increase the budget heading for this subject until it reaches 5% of the total municipal budget (06/09/2017)

The mayor of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón, and the delegate councilor of Social Services and Social Mediation, Carmen Martín del Amor, met on Wednesday with representatives of La Huertecica, Accem and Rascasa, who are members of the Poverty Reduction Network and the Social Exclusion (EAPN), and its president, Diego Cruzado.

The reason for this meeting was the desire to analyze the status of the pact that was signed at the beginning of this legislature for the fight against poverty.

In addition, issues such as the creation of a technical commission to monitor the project and the increase in the percentage of the municipal budget allocated for this purpose have been addressed.

This table would meet with a period of six months and its function would be to act as a space in which the municipal government team could work "side by side", as expressed by the first mayor, with representatives of the so-called 'third sector '.

This would facilitate that the local Executive can take into account what their representatives ask for, what their needs are, in a more fluid way and also be able to meet some indicators within the agreement that was signed "to be able to continue working continuously."

The other commitment that has been reached has been to work to increase the budget for social issues and work and actions dedicated to lifting people out of poverty to 5% of the total budget of the City Council.

"I wanted to share with them my involvement, directly as mayor, in the social policy of the municipality and, above all, I want to continue advancing with them so that this collective and what it represents, which is fundamental, can continue to be established and continue going up one step further, "said Ana Belén Castejón after the meeting.

The first mayor stressed that, despite the gradual increase in the municipal budget allocated to this cause, during the meeting this commitment was reached to revise the budget line dedicated to the fight against poverty and social exclusion in order to try to continue to increase it.

"I want to give them that qualitative and quantitative leap in what they represent and the great work they do," said Castejón.

"They have given much quality to the social policy project of the City of Cartagena," he added.

Likewise, the mayor has shown her willingness to continue working with the regional government, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and other institutions and entities involved in this matter to "place social policy at the top of the agenda."

Diego Cruzado, for his part, has made a "very positive evaluation" of the meeting and has indicated that since the EAPN are developing projects and the pact against poverty that was signed at the beginning of the legislature and also work in the same line with the FEMP and the Autonomous Community.

He also thanked the first mayor for his commitment to try to continue increasing the amount destined to the fight against poverty and social exclusion as well as the implementation of the table of follow-up of the pact.

Carmen Martín thanked for their presence and collaboration to the representatives of the different entities and stressed the creation of the technical committee to follow up the pact.
