Awarded in Singapore and Portugal for the simulator of driving of tractors with anti-roll bow (06/09/2017)

Researchers at the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) who develop new machine safety devices are doubly congratulations.

Sendos international congresses, held in Singapore and in the Portuguese city of Braganza, have been awarded prizes for their simulator of driving tractors with immersive virtual reality for training in prevention of occupational hazards using anti-tip bows.

The XXI World Congress on Safety and Health at Work 2017, held from 3 to 6 September in Singapore and organized by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the International Social Security Association (ISSA), has selected, among a thousand posters presented, the one made by Isidro Ibarra, in collaboration with Lola Ojados, Bernardo Martín, Beatriz Miguel, Álvaro Macián and Gustavo Salcedo, explaining the operation of the simulator developed by the Cartagena Polytechnic.

At the same time, at the IX Iberian Congress of Agroengineering 2017, Bernardo Martín has collected the prize for the best communication in the area of educational innovation in agroengineering, also focused on the simulator that allows you to put yourself in the skin of a tractor driver, assimilating the risks of a rollover and identifying when the arch should be activated to avoid crushing.

The software, designed by Lola Ojados, was already awarded at the XVI International Conference on Occupation Risk Prevention (ORP), held last October in Colombia.

"With the software you can check the effectiveness of the arch without having to overturn a real tractor," explains Ojados, head of Graphic Expression at the Technical Research Support Service (SAIT) of the Polytechnic.

The folding bow is an automatic drive system patented by the UPCT within the line of projects in New Machine Safety Devices coordinated by Isidro Ibarra, director of Occupational Risk Prevention at the UPCT.

"We can parameterize the dimensions and specifications of all tractor models and test the bow against different risks, speeds or slopes of the terrain," says the researcher.

The simulator can be played on different screens, from a computer to a mobile phone through a specifically developed 'app', but the most realistic experience is lived with a virtual reality glasses to get into the scene and even more with the platform of driving, with steering wheel, pedals and controls of a working vehicle, that the UPCT has installed in a room of immersion in the Center of Development and Technological Innovation (CEDIT) of Fuente Álamo.

The platform tilts in three dimensions depending on the terrain where the virtual tractor circulates.

"The feeling of rollover is total, so in addition to simulating an accident contributes to raising awareness about the importance of the safety arc and the non-assumption of risks," says Ojados.
