The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment will invest 140,000 euros in the improvement and recovery of all the splendor of the Palace of Aguirre in Cartagena, one of the most important and best preserved modernist buildings in the Region, classified as a Property of Cultural Interest.
This building of the Autonomous Community, which is part of the Regional Museum of Modern Art and is the headquarters of the regional government in Cartagena, was examined by the technicians of Culture, who felt it necessary to make a series of improvements to maintain its integrity.
To this end, a project was prepared for the restoration of the ceramic elements - glazed ceramic tiles - that constitute the cover of the cupulín that crowns the union of the two facades of the Aguirre Palace and the external carpentries, both metallic and wood.
The tender for the project is in its final phase and work is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
The director general of Cultural Heritage, Juan Antonio Lorca, stated that "we want this action in the Palacio de Aguirre to be an example of maintenance and conservation of our heritage. Undoubtedly, we are facing one of the most significant buildings of the projected by the great Víctor Beltrí and we want it to look with all its grandeur, so that it is a dynamic focus of the culture and the tourism in Cartagena ".
Technical details
In the case of cupulín, the intervention also seeks to improve the safety of the anchoring of the shell-shaped elements that cover it, since the passage of time had caused a deterioration and the risk of detachment in the event of strong storms.
The project includes the installation of auxiliary means - tubular tracks - and the creation of a work platform that allows to approach the disassembly of the zinc or lead capping elements that form the ridge and eaves, as well as the dismantling of the total of the current ones ceramic parts, in order to proceed to the replacement of existing waterproofing.
Subsequently, all those that have a good state of conservation will be replaced, and, if necessary, to replace, by means of new pieces similar to those existing, those that can not be recovered, all anchored by stainless steel nails to ensure their fixation in the future.
Likewise, the condition of the zinc and lead elements and their paint will be reviewed, before their replacement, restoring or reconstructing, also, those that present a greater deterioration.
On the other hand, the project also deals with the restoration of exterior carpentries, both metallic and wooden, including the lookout and shutters, by surface sanding, restoration and, if necessary, replacement of those elements in worse condition , and subsequent priming of several layers of enamel.
The restoration of the main door, realized in walnut wood, will also be carried out by means of a specialized treatment for this type of material and for the metallic appliqués present in it.
"In short, we make an intervention that will ensure the complete recovery of the Palacio de Aguirre. We are also working on the possibility of conditioning the site with which the Autonomous Community counts next to the building, in order to have an open space for carry out cultural activities and revitalize this area of ​​the historic center of Cartagena.
