The Popular Party has registered a motion in the Regional Assembly in which it asks the regional government to initiate the file to declare of Well of Cultural Interest the monument to the Heroes of Cuba and Cavite erected in the city of Cartagena devised to pay homage to the fallen and Survivors of the War of 98, a disastrous conflict for Spain and especially for those who fought in the naval battles of Cavite and Santiago de Cuba, among which were some Cartagena, according to the popular deputy, Elena Ruiz.
Our objective is to protect a symbol of great historical and cultural value for Cartagena and for all Spain has affirmed the regional deputy of the PP, Elena Ruiz promoter of the initiative who remembers that its construction had a great social support since it was paid by means of a popular subscription In which military, civil, political authorities and even the Kings of Spain, Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenia participated who were in charge of inaugurating them on November 9, 1923.
The deputy of the PP in the autonomic parliament remembers that the monument is the work of the sculptor Julio González Pola that used for its construction materials like marble stone, black marble and bronze.
And stands out its great size since it is raised on a base of eight square meters and fifteen of height.
In its central part it houses a large obelisk decorated in its fronts with allegories of Glory, the shield of Spain and the inscription that remembers to the heroic sailors that integrated the squares of Cervera and Montojo.
Elena Ruiz has emphasized that the events of that military confrontation are also present in two sculptural groups at the base of the monument and also form part of the same plates where are recorded the names of those who died fighting in Cuba and the Philippines.
This testimony of the History of Spain has undergone some remodeling and even acts of vandalism and some of the elements that integrate it have been replaced by copies and the original pieces are conserved in the Arsenal Military of Cartagena.
This monument has tangible and intangible values, historical values, art and is symbolic of a relevant part of the history of Spain so we must preserve and protect it, said Elena Ruiz.
