A FASCINATING TRIP THROUGH HISTORY

The Museum of the Roman Theater has its entrance located in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, opposite the Palace Hall, one of the busiest squares in the city and a few meters from the port.

The project of recovery carried out by the architect Rafael Moneo, supposes a trip in the time and an itinerary from the sea to the high points culminating the visit with the unexpected appearance of the imposing stage of the Theater.

After passing the Museum's doors, the visitor will meet the History Corridor.

It explains the urban evolution of the site of the theater from the 21st century to the 1st century BC, illustrated both with a selection of archaeological objects recovered in the excavation and with graphic and audiovisual documentation.

The corridor opens directly into a large room of seven meters high, which serves as an extraordinary setting for the exhibition of the elements that make up the monumental architecture of the Cartagena Theater.

The height of the room has allowed to recreate the first order of the stage facade with the original elements.

Through an escalator you reach the second room, the largest of the museum.

This room allows the visitor to get acquainted with the functions of the Theater in Antiquity, because in addition to its playful function the theater building was the perfect architectural framework for the political and religious propaganda of the emperor.

Its decorative program was loaded with ideological messages among which the introduction of the cults to the traditional divinities of the Roman State through three altars where the symbols of the Triad capitolina are represented, pieces carved in marble of Carrara of great excellence, that They preside over the central part of the room.

Room 2 connects with the corridor under the church of Santa Maria la Vieja, where a Roman house with mosaic is preserved and amortized for the construction of the theater, as well as the terraced walls of the early 13th century church and other medieval remains.

This corridor also has a fundamental mission for the architect, to prepare the visitor for the contemplation he will have at the end of his tour: a complete view of the Theater, as magnificent as it is unexpected.

The exit of the corridor ends in a footbridge that directly links with the circulation hall at the foot of the middle stand.

From this point we have a complete view of the Theater, from here we start the journey inside the monument through the circulation corridors, and through the radial stairs that allow us to go down to the orchestra and go up to the stage to contemplate the partial restitution of the Scenic facade made with the insertion of elements.

Completed the visit to the monument, the exit is made by the Plaza de la Condesa Peralta.

The visit lasts approximately 60 minutes and can be done for free since the museum offers visitors a large number of resources (panels, video, models, interactive ...) that allow the understanding of all the pieces and elements exposed .
