The public that approaches Cartagena has a new attraction in the archaeological complex of the Roman Forum: the Sanctuary of Isis, which is already open to all users after the official opening held on Thursday 28 July.
It is a temple of the 1st century AD that remained in use until the 3rd century AD and demonstrates the importance of the city at the time as well as the presence of worship to this deity of Egyptian descent whose devotion was widespread throughout The Mediterranean with presence in cities as relevant as Pompeii and Ostia in the Italian peninsula, Sabratha in North Africa, and Baelo Claudia and Italica in the Iberian peninsula.
The mayor of Cartagena and president of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas, Ana Belén Castejón, accompanied by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Javier Celdrán, vice president of the Repsol Foundation, Ignacio Egea, the director of the Repsol Industrial Complex in Cartagena, Juan Antonio Carrillo de Albornoz and the manager of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas, Agustina Martínez, inaugurated the temple of Isis, once its recovery and valorization were completed, in an event that was attended by the Councilor for Decentralization, Juan Pedro Torralba, The mayor of Archaeological Heritage, Ricardo Segado, the Treasury and Interior, Francisco Aznar, the delegate councilor for Social Services and Social Mediation, Carmen Martín del Amor, and the Councilor for Culture, David Martínez.

"It is a pleasure to inaugurate today one of the phases of this crown jewel in Cartagena's archaeological heritage," said Ana Belén Castejón, who thanked the Repsol Foundation for its collaboration and the workers of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas and archaeologists and Architects for their work.

The archaeological interventions carried out in Insula II of the Barrio del Foro Romano de Cartagena, with the support of the Repsol Foundation, promoted by the Cartagena City Council and executed by the Cartagena Port of Cultures Consortium, with an amount in this second phase of 940,460 euros, Have made it possible to recover and make available to tourists and the general public the important monumental complex of this temple dedicated to Isis, which thus becomes one of the most interesting archaeological pieces of the city.
In the process of its valorization have been carried out works of conservation-restoration and consolidation of the whole.
From the respect to the original, the geometry and volume have been restored to the sanctuary, reintegrating the architectural elements recovered during the field work and restoring the missing ones from the study of the previous ones.
The architectural adaptation has consisted in structurally stabilizing the buildings of the S. I, in order to receive the relevant volumetric restitutions, as well as to achieve the connection, with an accessible walkway, from the museum area corresponding to Insula I of the Forum District, with this New apple
Likewise, an access has been left that allows to contemplate one of the vaulted bodies of the cistern conserved under the patio, as well as the measures of protection for the visit and to avoid the entrance of the rain water by the slope.
This sanctuary was built in the middle of the 1st century, coinciding with the time in which the port of the city experienced a period of great economic and commercial splendor, following the models of the time in other areas of the Mediterranean such as the cities mentioned above Of Pompeii, Ostia, Sabratha or Baelo Claudia, Italica and also in Delos, and remained in use until the S. III and later to be amortized for other uses.
The total investment that the Repsol Foundation has dedicated to the excavation, recovery and enhancement of the Barrio del Foro Romano amounts to more than four million euros, of which in this phase have invested 940,460 euros, remaining to be invested in phases III And IV two million euros.
At present the archaeological phases III and IV are already underway with the lower and upper terraces of the temple and the ancient forum.
The Roman Forum District received 50,000 visitors last year.
