"Today there is a lot of pettiness toward the other, the human being seeks to shut himself up," says the artist Nadín Ospina on the occasion of the inauguration of his exhibition 'Del otro mundo' in La Mar de Músicas.
And with so many factors that divide, he thinks that culture and art can be "that way of approaching between so many confrontations".
The Colombian artist opens this Friday, July 14, his second speech at the Cartagena festival, where he was present at the edition dedicated to Colombia.
The centerpiece of the exhibition, 'The raft', is, as its name suggests, a raft boarded by five aliens who are in a position to ask for help, one with outstretched hands and the other holding several figures lying on the ground .
"It is inspired by the painting 'The Raft of the Medusa' by Théodore Géricault", has explained about his work, in which it is evident the allusion to the thousands of people who have died drowned in the Mediterranean trying to reach other coasts in the middle Of the European migratory crisis.
"The figure of the extraterrestrial emerges as a symbol of these people who come from other places, these intercultural encounters that can sometimes be problematic," said the artist.
Ospina explores, through these figures, the concept we have of the 'other' as a distant, distant being, different from us, and with this it refers to the refugee crisis in Europe, the manifestations of xenophobia and rejection abroad Are becoming more common every day.
Intelligence and humor are the main characteristics of Nadin Ospina, said Councilman for Culture, David Martinez, who recalled that the artist has been working in the plastic arts for more than 30 years.
Thus, he said that "his work is an exploration of new languages of art that allow a social, cultural and even political reflection" and recalled that, since the 1980s "there have been no news about the great work of Nadin Ospina ".
"Unforgettable was his exhibition at the Palacio Molina, in the heart of La Mar de Músicas in 2010, with Colombia as a guest country, to such an extent that he is one of the very few artists he repeats in another edition.
Its blue moai in the wind is one of those images of the festival that remain in the retina of the Cartagena, "Martínez recalled.
The exhibition will be open until August 30 in the Palace of Molina, during summer time, from 10.00 to 14.00 hours and from 17.30 to 20.30 on Saturdays and Sundays;
