The work of the students of the First University Campus of Archeological Practices and Training 'Ciudad de Cartagena', which began on Monday, July 3, are beginning to bear fruit.
After the excavation in several grids of the upper part of the Sacred Mount, have come to the light in the nearest part to the mill Roman structures of late-republican period -S.
I aC confirming the hypotheses raised after the study of georadar at the time and which suggested the presence of archaeological remains.
The Councilor for Sustainable Development, José López, the General Coordinator of Historic and Archaeological Heritage of the City Council, María del Carmen Berrocal, and the manager of Casco Antiguo, Antonio García, visited this Thursday the area in which the Works of this campus whose main objective is the training of the young people who study studies related to archeology and history and in which they perform a morning fieldwork that gives way, in the afternoons, to theoretical classes taught by professors of the University (UPCT) and archaeologists, who have talked about the latest technologies applied to archeology, methodology, drawing, inventory, and so on, as well as visits to different places in the city with professionals who have excavated them.
Before the beginning of the work, it was based on a study of georadar that indicated the presence of old structures, although its scope and date were not known.
In addition there was a complementary test by the UPCT consisting of a tomography before exposing the remains and another will be done later, on the remains themselves, so that the results can be guiding the future with a view to programming Of new campaigns and their planning.
A POSSIBLE HIGH CLASS DOMUS
As indicated by María del Carmen Berrocal, what is in the grid that is currently working, in the area closest to the old mill, is a "fertile archeological deposit" in which are appearing a series of walls with some Plaster and a lot of ceramic, stucco and all kinds of archaeological material that students are beginning to wash and invent in the afternoon.
Also, within the set of one of these structures, in the same quadrant, there are also the remains of a column in the style of the period in the center of the Italian peninsula and the area of Campania, with a stone base Limestone and a truss made of flat bricks of triangular shape that probably would later be coated with some type of stucco, simulating worked marble or painted plaster.
The general coordinator of Historical and Archaeological Heritage has pointed out that the excavation tasks that are being carried out "are perhaps in a domus" in which there is "a long wall with its corresponding plastering".
He also commented that the possibility of the structures that are being unearthed is private housing of medium or high level belonging to "a Roman neighborhood of medium-high standing because the materials that come out are of great quality, and in any house Were those sculptures, "in reference to double-sided hermits that were found here along with several stuccos in the 19th century, of which one is the image that appears on the Campus logo.
Berrocal also recalled that it was here, in Monte Sacro, that appeared in the XVI century a Ara Pacis, a temple dedicated to the representation of Peace, reason why it has indicated that "it is not at all disposable" that they can To find later the vestiges of some temple "by the entity of the remains that were detected in the georradar", although the coordinator has been prudent and has taken care to affirm nothing in this aspect, since it has emphasized that in the matter of archeology We work with hypotheses that have to be confirmed.
In this regard, he also added that it is believed that Monte Sacro could be one of the first sites occupied by the Romans upon arrival and that there might also be a previous Punic level.
Although in both cases it is a matter of the moment of elucubraciones on which to work as the remains that are being discovered confirm or refute these assumptions.
SECOND PHASE OF CAMPUS
María del Carmen Berrocal has left open the possibility of transferring to September the second phase of the project because of the high temperatures and the strong heat, which make the field work in the area very hard.
In this way, the new turn could coincide with the historical festivals of Carthaginians and Romans, which would be an added incentive for the students.
In another order of things, the coordinator has advanced that since the organization of the Campus are in deals with American and Polish universities.
CERRO URBAN RECOVERY
The Councilor for Sustainable Development, José López, has stated that the urbanization of Monte Sacro will be done, "in an orderly way, with the techniques proposed by archaeologists" and following its dictation.
"We are aware that the future of Cartagena is now absolutely linked to its past, to its more than 3000 years of history, and therefore we have to be consistent," explained the mayor.
That is why López has called for "digging and, once it has been excavated, put in value" and that the construction of houses and urban areas can be made compatible, in the future, with the own deposits so that the area can return to Have life, as was done at the time with other points of interest such as Cerro del Molinete and the Barrio del Foro Romano.
Antonio Garcia, manager of Casco Antiguo, has also pronounced along the same line, who has stated that it is a question of "putting archeology ahead".
"Archeology tells us what there is, and from what archeology tells us, we are already designing the urbanization of the hill, we are imagining how it can be that hill," he said.
Garcia has confirmed that the campus "is going to remain" and the goal is to make as many campaigns as possible, although he has asked for the support of private enterprise through sponsorship and patronage since these are large projects that can only be To carry on with private aid through the sponsorship and collaboration of universities and the supervision of professionals.
Also, the manager of Casco Antiguo, has assured that this will bring a lot of return for Cartagena "because there will be all the support of cultural tourism" and, on the other hand, has bet on the recovery of the eight-bladed cartagenero mill found in High of the Sacro Monte.
INNOVATIVE PROJECT FOR THE ANFIETATRO
María del Carmen Berrocal also referred to the project presented recently to the Autonomous Community for the recovery of the Roman Amphitheater, "an absolutely new project, designed ex profeso for what is the coexistence of the Plaza de Toros and the Amphitheater" Keep the double ring of the bullring without touching or having to make perforations in the bottom, so that the Amphitheater is absolutely respected, "according to the coordinator.
"It is a matter of consolidating the 'double u' of the two walls of the Bullring through the ground and tying the intermediate walls," explained Berrocal, "a respectful formula with both structures" that provides security to get underneath .
Equally has highlighted "the quality of the building elevations", 11'40 meters (about four floors).
"It's a very important thing," he said.
The project is, according to the coordinator, "absolutely new" and is already endorsed by the College of Architects.
In addition, the councilor for Archaeological Heritage, Ricardo Segado, has requested a meeting with the director general of Cultural Assets and also a technical meeting for this same month of July, with the intention of avoiding the August break, in order to be able to remove it To hire as soon as possible, Berrocal has confirmed.
