On July 3 began the archaeological excavations in the Barrio del Foro Romano, specifically, in the space of the forum that gives name to the archaeological area.
The planned tasks are centered in the public square, whose excavation was realized partially in several campaigns carried out between the years 1995 and 2006. These interventions allowed to identify part of a great square, that extends towards the present San Francisco square, where They preserve the remains of a tribune, a very common element in the forums to improvise speeches, remnants of hydraulic installations, part of the portico that surrounds the open area and the facades of the adjoining buildings, among them the curia, the building of the local senate.
"We have unified phases III and IV of the work to speed up the overall recovery of the Forum. This week the cleaning and scrapping of this platform has started, where the remains of the foundations of the houses of the Castilian neighborhood of El Molinete are still preserved. The Forum is one of our top priorities given its archaeological and historical importance, "explained the mayor and president of Cartagena Puerto de Culturas, Ana Belén Castejón.
In the succeeding weeks the archaeological excavation of this area will proceed with the object of identifying the remains of the cult building or, failing that, the archaeological evidences that can remain either of phases previous to century I or of the occupation of This area in the centuries after the abandonment of the public area that, according to archaeologists, must have occurred at an advanced moment of the third century.
The archaeological excavation planned in the area has a period of execution of about 7 months for the field work and an additional time for the interpretation of the results obtained.
They are promoted by the City of Cartagena, are funded by the Repsol Foundation, and are managed by Cartagena Puerto de Culturas.
The intervention carried out last May has made it possible to define the façade of the curia, which has a large access to the lobby that precedes the meeting hall of the local government.
Also the remains of a devastated building for the construction of the forum that we know today and which raises a good number of questions regarding its construction date, as well as the existence of a previous forensic place, related to the foundation of the Colony around the year 54 BC
This public plaza is closed to the north by a large terraced wall that has at its ends two monumental staircases that allow access to the upper terrace, where a large temple should be located that could be dedicated to the Capitoline Triad or to the cult To the emperor.
In the space between the two stairs there are a series of ties that delimit several rooms.
