Cyber attacks, such as WannaCry or Petya, will not stop Symantec strategist and evangelist Rameses Gallego recommends defending against electronic crime with "different layers of protection, like an onion" (10/07/2017)

Top level experts are participating today in the summer course of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) 'The Defense of Cyberspace and its regulation'.

Speakers include the director of the National Institute of Cybersecurity, the director of the National Center for Critical Infrastructure Protection, the Director of Cybersecurity of the Department of Homeland Security and the ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) president, the Prestigious international level.

Along with them specialists, prosecutors, law professors, businessmen, hackers and military experts present the challenges and opportunities of the digital environment.

One of the speakers on the first day of the course was the president of ISACA in Barcelona, Ramsés Gallego, strategist and evangelist of the international corporation Symantec, which develops and markets computer security programs.

- What is a technology evangelist?

- To preach the word of the company, beyond the technical or commercial work.

In my case, to convey the message of the importance of cybersecurity.

- In the last few weeks we have been experiencing global cyber attacks.

Were they necessary to become aware of vulnerability?

"They were certainly a wake-up call."

Many companies have begun to wonder: 'Can this happen to us?'

The answer is that attacks like WannaCry or Petya will not stop.

- In the case of WannaCry, the security flaw had been detected for months, but Petya took advantage of a very recent crack.

Can we be permanently patching our systems?

- There are always ways to protect, even if there are no patches, to attacks of Day 0 that take advantage of vulnerabilities that we do not know.

Safety systems must be conceived as an onion, with different layers of protection.

Antiviruses are necessary, but they are not a magic wand.

It also requires encryption, analysis, monitoring ...

- What training is required to tackle the challenges of cybercrime?

- We live in a world that changes at the speed of light and in the University teach things that are no longer worth.

They are a good basis, but you have to complement the training with new knowledge, such as quantum computing.
