The Museum of the Roman Theater of Cartagena will receive this month many experts in the course 'The cultural legacy of the Enlightenment: from the diffusion of antiquity to intellectual renewal', organized in collaboration with the Summer Courses 2017 of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).
Through various lectures, round tables and other activities, the participants will reflect, from July 17 to 19, on the cultural heritage of a historical period that left a significant imprint in the city of Cartagena, which with the arrival of the dynasty of The Bourbons experienced one of the greatest urban transformations in its history.
The Director General of Cultural Heritage, Juan Antonio Lorca, also a member of the Board of the Roman Theater (composed of the Community, the City Council and Cajamurcia Foundation), declared that "the Museum of the Roman Theater, the most visited in the whole Region, A space open to participation which, in addition to numerous exhibitions, will welcome other training activities related to the dissemination of heritage ".
Lorca also recalled that "during this year 2017 is celebrating in Cartagena with various acts the 'Year of the Enlightenment', a program that is putting in value the patrimonial wealth of the Enlightenment and that will be extended with this new course that Aims to approach what was a relevant historical moment from various perspectives, with the participation of experts from very different areas. "
Conferences
The presentations of the course will cover, for example, the diffusion of Classical Antiquity promoted by the young king of Naples, Carlos de Borbón, and later king of Spain, Carlos III;
A king who is not only indebted to the discovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum, but also the diffusion of the discoveries and, with it, the influence in the art of his time.
The course will begin with Maria del Carmen Alonso, researcher and curator of the exhibition 'Carlos III and the diffusion of Classical Antiquity', who will analyze the figure of King Charles in the formation of Academies and the dissemination of the findings of Pompeii, and With the presentation of José María Luzón, an academician of the Museum of the Royal Academy of San Fernando, on the collection of classical sculpture formed in this period.
The stay in Naples of the king also meant the development of the Neapolitan Nativity, central theme of the conference that will be in charge of the teacher and director of the Salzillo Museum of Murcia Maria Teresa Marín, while the influence in the fashion will be treated by the conservative of the Museum of the Costume, Concepción Herranz.
On the discovery of the Temple of Isis in Pompeii, the first Egyptian sanctuary that eighteenth-century scholars could contemplate will speak Professor José Miguel Noguera, Professor of Archeology at the University of Murcia.
The location of a similar sanctuary in Cartagena highlights the relationship of these Roman cities and, in fact, the course includes a subsequent visit to the temple of the port city.
The Enlightenment was a period of great scientific advances, intellectual renewal and also the era of naval professionalization in Cartagena;
Topics that will be addressed by UPCT professors Juan Francisco López and the University of Murcia Juan José Sánchez Baena.
The course will also analyze the development and urban transformation in Cartagena illustrated in the lecture given by UCAM Architecture Professor José Antonio Martínez López.
The activity will be completed with the visit to the Museum of Artillery to know the new model of the city made from the plan of Ordovas of 1799.
In addition to different round tables on Carlos III, the cultural patronage and the Enlightenment in Cartagena, will be held, finally, conferences by the anthropologist and chronicler of Cartagena José Sánchez, who will talk about the customs in the eighteenth century,
And Emeritus Professor of Art History at the University of Murcia Cristóbal Belda, who will address the influence of new ideas in the Church of the time and its relationship with the Court.
The course will take place in the morning and afternoon.
