Cartagena will return this weekend to its origins in the times of ancient Rome with the Roman Festival Carthago Nova Vita, which will be held in the esplanade of the Port from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 July.
The Councilor for Archeological Heritage Ricardo Segado and the manager of the company Antikorum, which organizes the event, Antonio Vicente Carrillo, have appeared this Wednesday to present the activities with which the port city will retract two millennia to recreate its prosperous Roman past.
This is a new experience of a cultural-leisure festival that seeks to move the visitor to the daily life of Cartagena at this time with a proposal that is based on constant interaction with the public thanks to a thematic area where you can stroll the streets Roman and where people will feel as if they are walking through the ancient Carthago Nova.
In addition, it has a complete program that includes diverse cultural activities that, through workshops, talks and activities of dynamization, will contribute to spread the Roman past of the city.
There will also be shows and animations by Titirambo, such as the sale of slaves and gladiator fights, among many others, or a period market where you can buy handicraft products and a children's area with workshops and activities for the little ones.
The site will also have a restoration area where tastings and workshop-exhibition will be held.
In this respect, it is worth noting that in it they recreate themselves, with a series of decorations imitating a Roman street inspired by the streets of Pompeii and illustrating how Carthago Nova was also a bakery, its taverns, shops and workshops, where In addition it shows how the different basic products like bread, oil or garum were elaborated, a sauce elaborated with salty fish very quoted at the time, to which only the wealthy classes could accede and of which the old Carthago Nova was an important focus of exploitation.
Flor de Garum, Baetica and Libum, both in the market and in the taverns and the restaurant, you can taste this and other products like the wines 'Mesalina' (cinnamon), 'Sanguis' (roses), 'Antinous' (of violets) and 'Mulsum' (of honey with spices) or a cheese of goat injected and macerated with this last broth.
The cost of the tastings will be 2 euros and include a glass of wine accompanied by a canape made with alec de boquerón (a paste that is formed in the elaboration of the garum and served as a spice to accompany) or with the Libum cheese.
On the other hand, in the restaurant and the tavern will be made a Roman menu in which the meat will be dressed with garum to enhance the flavor, and in the termopolium, the Roman tavern, will be served tapas of Roman recipes and beer for the price of € 2.5.
The gastronomic star will be the garum, which along with the wines and the cheese constitute a faithful product, since researchers of the University of Cadiz developed the formula of the same one from some rest that they found in Pompeya and of the translation and interpretation of The vestiges that still remain of this old recipe.
This group created the company Flor de Garum, with which the organization has reached an agreement for the product to be present in this festival, as well as the wines Baetica and Libum cheese, all of which are not distributed in Any place, since they have a gourmet character.
The installation of this thematic area merges the concept of theme park with the period market with the aim of divulging the Roman era and, more specifically, its daily life.
Therefore, the imitation of the streets and the premises, as well as the aforementioned gastronomy of the moment, will join the diverse historical recreations, that will plunge cartageneros and tourists in the traditions, the celebrations, the religion, the leisure and the Form of life in general of the Carthago Nova of 2,000 years ago.
