Thirty preuniversities of excellence from all over Spain will do internships every week of hydraulic research, astronomy, energy efficiency and forensic science while discovering the Region
From today, and for the first time, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) is the main venue of the Summer Scientific Campus organized by the International Campus of Excellence Mare Nostrum (CMN), which will be attended by 120 young people from all over Spain during this month of July .
"To welcome this technological dissemination program is a great organizational challenge for our Scientific Culture Unit", highlighted the rector of the Polytechnic, Alejandro Diaz, who was accompanied in the presentation by the coordinator of Campus Mare Nostrum and vice-rector of Coordination and Internationalization Of the University of Murcia, Bernardo Cascales, and the vice-rector of Research of the UPCT, Beatriz Miguel.
"The commitment to alternate the campus of the Campus between the two public universities in the Region and to provide facilities and resources to visiting researchers is a remarkable experience of collaboration within the framework of CMN," added the rector.
The students who open the Scientific Campus come from up to eleven autonomous communities, including those farthest from the Region of Murcia, such as the Canary Islands and Galicia.
The young people, most of whom are girls, will stay at the residence Alberto Colao.
Thirty pre-university students will conduct each week one of the four research projects that have been prepared by the public university disseminators of the Region.
The young students, with an excellent academic record, will do tests in the laboratories of the Polytechnic of Cartagena and enjoy recreational, sports and cultural activities.
There will also be a weekly visit to the facilities of the University of Murcia and departures to some of the main tourist attractions of the Region, such as La Manga, the Roman Forum of Cartagena and the mine Agrupa Vicenta de La Union.
Leisure activities also include a dance masterclass, scientific monologues and a night catamaran ride.
"The program is very complete, taking advantage of the natural environment of Cartagena and its lively cultural offer during the month of July, with the aim of making it an unforgettable experience and for these young people to return to the Region of Murcia and its universities" , Explained the vice-rector Beatriz Miguel.
Excellent records
Young people have been selected nationally for their academic record.
The Rector has indicated that at the end of this Scientific Campus they will have fun, they will have learned and will have easier to identify what to study in the University.
The Vice Chancellor of Research of the UPCT has highlighted "the incredible capabilities" of the participants.
"You must take this Campus as a gift that makes this country.
You will be the backbone of university students in the next few years, "he said.
The Vice Chancellor of Coordination of the University of Murcia has highlighted the cooperation and collaboration of the two public universities of the Region, united in the Campus of International Excellence.
Cascales has stated that this initiative is an integral experience to approach science.
Hydraulics, astronomy, energy efficiency and forensic science
Scientific activities will be distributed in four research projects.
The first will focus on hydraulic engineering, with workshops on water supply networks, transport infrastructure and water storage and port construction.
The youngsters will perform simulations in the hydraulic laboratories of the UPCT, which reproduce jumps of dams and effects of wave propagation.
Astronomy will be the nucleus of other activities, with observations of stars and planets, experiments of measurement of the speed of light and technological applications for the tracking of the stars.
The solar-powered vehicles will star in a third block of the Mare Nostrum Summer Scientific Campus, with a solar vehicle assembly workshop, where the pre-university students will work side by side with UPCT Solar Team students, who compete every year With other prototypes of electric vehicles in international energy efficiency races.
The latest research project will focus on the forensic sciences for the resolution of judicial cases.
Students will practice forensic psychology and entomology and legal medicine.
The Summer Scientific Campus is organized by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (Fecyt), Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and sponsored by the La Caixa Social Work.
