Rivera said that the port "gives added value to regional economic activity and consolidates its position as a reference in cruises and in the traffic of goods and contributes to improve the trade balance of the Region, placing us as one of the most active communities from Spain".
In this sense, he stressed that the "regional government has made in the last two years a firm commitment to the port of Cartagena as a gateway to goods in Europe, in order to strengthen a solid, sustainable, efficient and profitable model Which will be fundamental in the growth of the Region. "
Thus, it considered, "essential" the arrival of the High Speed ​​to Cartagena, the Mediterranean Corridor and its connection with the port and the Logistic Activities Zones envisaged in Murcia and Cartagena.
Rivera made the remarks following the Board of Directors of the Port of Cartagena, which approved the accounts for 2016, which highlighted the "good evolution of the regional port industry" and added that "these magnificent data will attract new investments and The application of more competitive rates for the sector ".

The Region consolidates its leadership at the national level with the most profitable port in Spain for the sixth consecutive year.

The positive evolution of recent years has led to a net turnover of 42 million euros, which represents a profit of 18.27 million euros, thanks largely to freight traffic.
The Region maintains its position within the group of the first five ports of Spain with the highest traffic of goods, which in 2016 mobilized a total of 31.88 million tons.
This figure is the third best figure in terms of volume of traffic in regional history.
In addition, the port of Cartagena is one of the five that contributes most to the Compensation Fund Interport, with 1.44 million euros per year, a territorial cohesion instrument that contributes to balance the economic balance of ports.
