The Council for Sustainable Development, led by José López, is proceeding this morning to lighten the weight of one of the ficus in the Plaza of Spain, in order to minimize the risks of falling branches as a consequence of high temperatures That are occurring during these days.
Technicians from the Department have explained that in Cartagena a plan is carried out periodic review of the ficus and every five or six months the size of its branches is cut to avoid its fall.
Object of these inspections and these periodic reduction prunings are the ficus existing in the Muralla del Mar, old Marine Hospital, Doors of San José, Plaza de San Francisco and Plaza de España, where the oldest and largest specimens .
The people in charge of the Department have also pointed out that the specimens that exist in some areas of Garden City are of another species and in principle are not affected by the heat like the rest, nor its branches are in danger of detachment.
As a result of the high temperatures, on Friday the inspections planned for this month were anticipated for a few days, observing in the Plaza of Spain fissures in one of the specimens, which is being intervened and its perimeter has been cordoned off.
In the case of San Francisco Square, none of the ficus show signs of detachment, although for minimizing risks, the area has been cordoned off and after consulting experts, it is planned to cut the size of a branch located on the kiosk of the square.
