The ship transport Castilla visits Cartagena (16/06/2017)

The Amphibious Assault Vessel 'Castilla', which is part of the naval force currently participating in the exercise of the Navy 'FLOTEX-17', stops in Cartagena from today, Friday 16, and until Sunday, June 18.

The ship has been moored in the port of Cartagena in the first hour, in the cruise terminal of the pier "Alfonso XII", where it makes a rest stop.

The "CASTILLA" will be open to visitors during the day today and tomorrow, from 16.00 to 20.30 hours.

The Rear Admiral and commander of the Naval Action Group 2, which is based in Rota, Antonio Martorell, and the Commander of the transport ship Castilla de la Armada, Enrique Nunez, visited this noon the Consistorial Palace, where they received the mayor of The city, José López.

After the interview they visited the ship, second of the class, that was delivered to the Navy in June of 2000. With a staff of 190 people, it has 160 meters of length, 25 of sleeve and 6 meters of draft, and can reach a Maximum speed of 20 knots.

The ship left the Naval Base of Rota on the 12th. In addition to the endowment, for the period of the exercise it is embarked the General Staff of the Force of Naval Action with its admiral on board, a unit of the "Naval Group of Beach "Consisting of four LCM1-E landing craft, as well as a reinforced Marine Infantry Landing Battalion.

In total, onboard the "CASTILLA" are 700 people on board.

The 'CASTILLA'

The 'Castile' is the twelfth ship of the Navy that bears this name.

Designed as an amphibious assault ship, it also has the capability to act as a command platform, by being able to embark a Marine Component Command level (MCC) headquarters and provide all the supports it requires.

The ship also has the capacity to carry out humanitarian aid missions for its cargo and transport capacity and for having a hospital with capacity for operating room, laboratory, dentistry, radiology and telemedicine.

It has eight stretchers for ICU and the possibility of isolating patients.

THE FLOATING EXERCISE

The exercise "FLOTEX-17" is being developed from last Monday to 23 June in the waters of the Gulf of Cadiz, Gibraltar Strait, Alboran Sea and western Mediterranean.

Twenty-nine surface vessels, a submarine, a Marine Corps landing force and helicopters and aircraft from the Aircraft Flotilla participate in the training.

In total more than 3300 men and women members of the Navy.

In addition there are several Air Force aircraft, Army units and several vessels from the NATO permanent groupings SNMG-2 and SNMCMG-2.

"FLOTEX-17" is focused on the planning and conduction of an international crisis scenario and its main objective is to coordinate at all levels the different preparation and enlistment needs of the units and the Floating States Staff interacting in a scenario common.

The exercise is structured in two phases, one for the integration and training of the units and a second tactical phase where a crisis scenario will be simulated within a medium / low intensity environment.
