The restoration of Holy Week heritage in Cartagena has received in the last year 170,000 euros from the Community
The Minister of Transparency, Participation and Spokesman of the regional government, Noelia Arroyo, and the director general of Cultural Heritage, Juan Antonio Lorca, today visited the Chapel of Socorro of the Old Cathedral of Cartagena with the elder brother of the Brotherhood of the Holy and Real Cristo del Socorro, Manuel Martínez Guillén, on the occasion of the beginning of the restoration works, for which the Community has contributed with 40,000 euros.
"We believe in public-private partnership as a formula for carrying out actions together with associations and social groups, we believe in the participation of society in making our region better," said the spokeswoman of the regional government, who stressed that only in the city of Cartagena The Executive has destined in the last year 170,000 euros to different projects of restoration of heritage of its Holy Week.
"This demonstrates the commitment of the Government of the Region of Murcia with the city of Cartagena, with its traditions, with Holy Week, with the work carried out by the brotherhoods," said Arroyo, who also recalled that the investment has been made in two Lines of action: restoration of the heritage and imagery of Holy Week, declared of International Tourist Interest, in the Regional Center of Restoration and the actions in heritage of the brotherhoods.
The restoration project, with a total investment of 100,000 euros, consists of improving the lining of the external walls of the chapel, to solve the problems of humidity of the building.
Also will be conditioned dressing room, by the restoration of the elements in wood that compose it, as well as waterproofing and improve the exterior finishes.
The execution time will be between 3 and 4 months.
The spokeswoman stressed that "from the regional government has done everything necessary to take a step further in the enhancement and recovery for citizens of this space so special Cartagena and the Region."
Chapel of Socorro
The Cristo del Socorro Chapel is located in the old church of Santa María de Cartagena, known as the Old Cathedral of Cartagena.
It is the second side chapel on the side of the Epistle and is, next to the Chapel of the Four Saints, one of the elements that is best preserved, thanks in part to previous works of repair and restoration.
The construction of the Chapel of Socorro, owned by the Carthaginian brotherhood of the same name, dates back to 1691 and was built in thanksgiving for the healing of a son of the Duke of Veragua.
It has rectangular plant covered with octagonal dome on pechinas.
It is decorated by plasterwork, where vegetable motifs are intermingled with cherubs, highlighting the decoration on the pendants, window frames and nerves.
The cover is made of baroque stucco.
It has a semicircular dressing room raised on the southeast facade, which is accessed by a back staircase that is reached from the presbytery of the chapel.
