Architects of international prestige evaluate at the UPCT the proposals of the new School of Architecture and Building (30/05/2017)

The countdown begins to know the definitive proposal of the new School of Architecture and Engineering of Building (ETSAE) of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).

The jury of the contest of ideas of the new School meets this Tuesday and Wednesday in the campus Alfonso XIII to know the more than 60 proposals received and to evaluate them.

In it participate six architects of international prestige that will help to look for the best constructive and design solution for the School.

These prestigious professionals are Víctor López Cotelo, National Architecture Award 2015 for his design of the School of Architecture of the University of Granada and professor at the University of Munich;

Victoria Acebo, awarded the Young Architecture Award of the IX Biennial of Architecture and in charge of the project of the Center of the Arts of A Coruña.

Architect Juan Domingo Santos, Enor of Architecture Award at the VIII Ibero-American Biennial of Architecture and Urbanism, is also on the jury, along with Carlos Quintanáns, coordinator of the Enor Prize and director of the magazine Tectónica.

These professionals also include Eva Prats, the first Dedaki-Minosse International Award from Vicenza, as well as a prize for the best architectural work at Summer Show of the Royal Academy and José Morales, also winner of the Spanish Architecture award.

In addition to them, the jury is composed by the vice-rector of Campus and Sustainability, Marcos Ros;

The director of the Technical School of Architecture and Construction of the UPCT, Carlos Parra;

The head of the Area of ​​Infrastructures and Sustainability of the University, Tomás Sánchez, a representative of the Department of Architecture and Technology of the Building of the University, Jaume Blancafort;

A representative of the Official Association of Architects of the Region (COAMU), María José Peñalver;

A representative of the Official Association of Surveyors of the Region (COAMU), Joaquin Perona, and by the City Council, Manuel Nicolás.

The Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena has received more than 60 proposals for the ideas competition for its new School of Architecture and Building, a building that has a budget of six million euros.

The proposals registered come from the entire Spanish geography.

Before beginning to evaluate the proposals received, the members of the jury have made a tour of the facilities of the School to know better what is currently and what needs are.

After the evaluation of the proposals, in the coming days will be announced the six candidates who will go to the second phase.

The six architects who pass to the second phase will have until summer to make the modifications that are indicated on their projects and once made, the jury will announce the winner of the contest, which will have until the end of the year to develop the project.

The School of Architecture and Building is currently based in one of the three original buildings of the Campus Alfonso XIII, built in the 60's of the last century.

The needs of the School exceed the capacity of this building, so that teaching and laboratories are spread over five other buildings on different campus of the University.

The new building will be financed by ERDF and UPCT funds.

The fees for the drafting of the Basic and Execution Project, as well as the Faculty Direction, Execution Direction and Coordination of Safety and Health in Works amounted to 364,523.09 euros.

In addition, the top four classified in the ideas contest will receive prizes of between 4,000 and 1,000 euros.
