Today, the Bureau of the Network of Reception Institutions has been constituted in the Palace Hall.

This body will try, from the City Council, to carry out a coordinated action with the associations competent in the matter of reception of refugees.

The Bureau has been chaired by the Mayor, José López, and is composed of the Deputy Mayor, Ana Belén Castejón, Councilor for Quality of Life, Francisco Calderón, the Councilor for Social Services, Carmen Martín del Amor, and the Councilor for Tourism , Obdulia Gómez, together with representatives of Accem, Cepaim, Red Cross and the municipal groups.

Cartagena is part of the Network of Municipalities for Refugee Reception since 2015, an initiative promoted by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).

The Councilor for Social Services explained that the table will develop six lines of action in different topics such as: health, education, training, employment, social benefits and standardization and regularization of their administrative situation.

These lines of work seek to cover all aspects necessary to normalize the lives of people who come to Cartagena in search of asylum.

It should be recalled that the Government of Spain has undertaken to host 17,387 refugees, and it is the Secretariat of Immigration and Emigration of the Ministry of Employment and Social Security which establishes how many refugees each municipality should receive.

The associations responsible in this area in the Region, Cepaim, Accem and Red Cross, are those who are directly responsible for caring for refugees, and these associations in turn request assistance to Social Services to meet the needs With which they are, Carmen Martin explained.

The mission of the city council in this sense is to coordinate, so that the refugees who come to Cartagena not only have a home, but also a process of accompaniment for issues such as schooling of children, employment, training ... So that they can normalize their situation over time that they are forced to reside in Spain as explained by the coordinator of Social Services, Damián Pérez.

The coordinator of Cepaim in Cartagena, Pedro López, stressed the importance of establishing this table, since people who seek refuge should have access "to our schools, health centers, employment offices and social services So all this can only be effective and efficient if you work in a fully coordinated way between social entities and public administrations. "

He has also reported that currently the group with the most work on asylum comes from Venezuela and is followed by the Syrian group.
