The Mayor of Cartagena, José López, attended this Thursday, May 18, the presentation of the flag of the urban militias of Carlos III, dating from the eighteenth century, in an act in which he was accompanied by the Councilor for Finance And Interior, Francisco Aznar, and the restorer Pilar Vallalta.
This historic piece will have a prominent place in the exhibition of the Municipal Archive in the Night of Museums, which is celebrated this Saturday, May 20.
Also attended by the councilman of the Area of Culture and Heritage, Ricardo Segado;
The municipal coordinator of Historical and Archaeological Heritage, María del Carmen Berrocal, and the Municipal Archive technician, Luis Miguel Pérez Adán.
José López has shown his pride before "the magnificent work they have done from the Municipal Archive" and recalled that this presentation "comes to complete the Year of the Enlightenment."
For his part, Aznar recalled that this flag was exposed for years in the Hall of Plenary of the Palace, but before the restoration work of the building was taken to the Municipal Archive next to another flag that will be restored along this year.
This flag was standard of the Urban Militia of the city, and includes the shield of Carlos III.
The Urban Militia Battalion of Cartagena was composed of nine companies with 300 seats.
These militias were composed of volunteers and, failing that, a lottery among the neighbors fit for their age and condition, who were recruited regularly and provided a non-permanent service.
Also, the restorer has pointed out that the flag presented on Thursday supported an older one "that was possibly an icon or a symbol so important that, to preserve it, they had to sew all the pieces of the old one on it."
Therefore, when seeing it for the first time, the team of municipal restaurateurs thought that they were embroideries of the decoration but, when analyzing the flag thoroughly in the workshop, "we realized that they were threads in red and yellow that they held The pieces of an older flag. "
The restoration process lasted almost a year, since the Plenary gave the approval at the beginning of this process.
For this, in the first place, has explained the restorer, had to "disassemble" the flag, with a work of documentation of all fragments of the previous flag.
A first physical and then chemical cleaning of the fabric was carried out.
After cleaning, the process of cold controlled drying began, which allowed the fiber to regain the rectangular shape of the flag, which, when recovered, had adopted a rhomboidal shape.
Afterwards, the restoration team went through the process of fabric consolidation, as it had a series of fractures and tears in the upper right.
For this purpose a taffeta of the same red color has been used, which serves as a base and, with a silk thread, the seams have been sewn.
Finally, for its presentation, has been fastened in a rigid and light support.
In addition, the restaurateur has shown to the attending public three yellow ties that belonged to the old flag, which are now in the process of consolidation.
