UPCT teaches young patients of Reina Sofía how to program and print a robot in 3D (11/05/2017)

The professor of Electronic Engineering of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena Juan Suardíaz and the UPCT Maker student association, expert in 3D printing, are imparting to patients of the Eating Disorders Unit a workshop of robotic programming and modeled within project # IngenioSanos of the UPCT in the Hospital Classrooms.

In the 12-hour workshop, young patients are building their own custom robot, learning how to design and print the mechanical parts of the little android, and program their control unit using open software and a low-cost robotic kit.

"They are delighted, they are marveling at the workshop and, although they had no notions of robotics or 3D design, they are catching it on the fly," says Ana Ferrer, head of the Hospital Classrooms.

"They liked it so much that one of the patients, to whom they are going to discharge, will take the software home to continue programming," he details.

"He has come great on the soul level for his self-esteem and is a great training opportunity that will remain on his resume," stresses Ferrer.

The workshop has also aroused the interest of hospital staff.

"Here we all want to be engineers," says the teacher, who hopes that the next course can also take place again in the new hospital classrooms of La Arrixaca.

In addition to this workshop, throughout the academic year, disseminators of the UPCT are carrying out scientific-technological demonstrations in the Hospital Classrooms of the Region of Murcia.

"#IngenioSanos' experience is opening the mouth to children, parents and toilets.

The disseminators of the UPCT have turned and have made a great effort to make the talks interactive so that patients feel like engineers for a day, "says Ferrer.

"The last session on underwater robotics fascinated the oncology plant," he recalls.
