The UPCT Solar Team, the team of the Polytechnic of Cartagena dedicated to developing prototypes of low energy consumption, presented this morning the new version of the vehicle that will compete for the next Shell Eco-marathon, which is celebrated this month in London And is the highest European wheel efficiency competition.
A dozen students from the different engineering courses offered by the UPCT form the UPCT Solar Team, which is renewed each year with new additions that make up the alumni march to different professional destinations.
One of them, former team leader Juan Gabriel Faxas has been involved in the videoconference presentation from the Dominican Republic, where he is now a university professor, assuring that "the effort is worthwhile, acquire skills that are valid for all areas of life ".
"Facing a comprehensive engineering project, solving technical problems, implementing innovations and negotiating with suppliers and sponsors brings a great deal of employability to students participating in competitive vehicle manufacturing teams," explains UPCT Solar Team coordinator Antonio Warrior.
The team of the UPCT will be one of fourteen Spaniards who will participate in the test that will host London between 25 and May 28 and which will be attended by more than a hundred squads from all over the continent.
In its last participation in the Shell Eco-marathon, celebrated in 2015 in Rotterdam, the UPCT Solar Team was in the 26th place of the 51 teams that competed in the category of prototypes driven by electric batteries.
They obtained the best record of the teams coming from the Region of Murcia and the third from Spain.
The most efficient brand of equipment using only electric power is 216 kilometers per kilowatt hour consumed, "which means multiplying by 200 the energy efficiency of a Seat Leon", have exemplified.
"Since the prototype that started in 2010, the weight has been cut in half and external friction and internal friction have been minimized by working with ceramic bearings," explained team leader Virginia Sánchez.
"This year we released the steering wheel, drive belt and control plate," he specified.
During the presentation at the Escuela de Industriales, which was attended by the rector, Alejandro Diaz, the sponsor company Esfera Solar, founded by UPCT alumnus Ángel Turpin, has delivered to the team an electric bike to promote sustainable transport .
