The only time Violeta Parra appeared on the cover of a newspaper was when she took her own life.
His work of collecting for years lost songs in the fields and recording them in five discs passed almost unnoticed in his country, as well as the fact that he rescued instruments like the guitarrón, that introduced in Chile the Andean charango or that became the first Latin American exhibition at the Louvre in Paris.
"Fortunately, the conception that has Violeta Parra changed decades ago, and this year the country that saw her birth is dedicating a festive year to her figure with hundreds of acts," said the Councilor for Culture.
Tita Parra and Manuel García will be in charge of putting the music in this tribute.
Tita Parra, granddaughter of Violeta, is a singer and guitarist, and will tour in a concert the song of her grandmother accompanied by Manuel Garcia, who is currently one of the main Chilean voices and a great scholar of the work of the honoree.
Together on the stage of the El Batel Auditorium, they will also perform their own creations such as the recent song by García 'De nombre Violeta'.
In addition, the festival will exhibit the documentary 'Violeta more alive than ever' by Angel Parra.
The visual work, directed and narrated by the son of Violeta, gathers testimonies of friends and close to the creator, like the poet Gonzalo Rojas, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Gastón Soublette and Lalo Parra.
The documentary, which began in 2006, is one of the initiatives that have been presented this year in Chile as part of the activities commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Violeta Parra.
The Cartagena part of this tribute will be made around the artistic section of the festival, 'The Sea of Art'.
Taking the work of Violeta Parra as a painter and textile artist, six Cartagena creators will create pieces around their figure and their creations.
Violeta's burlap fabrics were exhibited at the Louvre's Museum of Decorative Arts, which made her the first Latin American artist to exhibit there.
Parra also made paintings and ceramics in which he recreates the customs and popular beliefs of Chile.
Thus, in this tribute, the artists Dora Catarineu, Nicole Palacios, Juana Jorquera, Virginia Bernal, Maria Jose Contador and Angela Acedo will be in charge of performing this collective show.
