The mayor, José López, will participate in a Eucharist in which he will make a vow of confirmation of the patronage of this saint, agreed to the celebration of the commemoration of the Brotherhood of San Ginés de la Jara, this Saturday, April 22. 27 of April of 1677 by the Town hall.
During these days the Brotherhood of San Ginés commemorates with a Cultural Week the centenary of its refoundation in 1917 and the tenth anniversary of its last reactivation in 2007. For it has organized diverse activities lúdico and sport;
And tonight, at 20 hours, in the auditorium of the Museum of the Roman Theater, will take place the awards ceremony of the Literary Justas.
These ephemeris also coincide with the providential election of the saint as a patron of Cartagena, who performed the innocent hand of a child extracting his name from the interior of a pitcher, next to the name of other saints of the time.
It was in 1677, when a serious epidemic that attacked the children ravaged the city.
The City Council wanted to implore the mercy of its patron, but nobody knew who it was;
So it was decided his appointment.
Papers with names of several saints were introduced in a pitcher, and a boy drew one with the name of San Gines de La Jara.
But as with the name of San Gines there were already several saints, it was decided to re-enter the name in the chanted and to get another.
What was the surprise, when San Gines de la Jara again came out, and so on three consecutive times, finally remembering that San Gines de la Jara was named Patron of Cartagena.
The confirmation vote of the patronage will take place during a mass that will begin at 20:30 hours in the Church of Santa Maria de Gracia, and in which the mayor will be accompanied by the second deputy mayor, Francisco Calderón.
During the mass also will be named Sister of Honor to Elena Ruiz Valderas and like Cofrade of Honor, to Arsenal Militar.
Before 7:30 pm there will be a procession from the Basilica of Charity, and after the Mass there will be a tasting of michirones in the square of San Ginés
