Creativity, initiative, experience and training, keys to undertake and be competitive, according to a thesis of the UPCT (20/04/2017)

A doctoral thesis from the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) has detected the sociocultural factors that affect the professional preferences of students and their decision to start businesses.

Proactivity and originality are some of the common features between those who are interested in being entrepreneurs, both in the university stage and in the earlier stages of their education, according to the conclusions of Mario Rosique's research.

"The confidence of the students in their own capacities is a key variable so that they seriously consider an enterprising career", says Antonia Madrid, director of the thesis with Domingo García.

On the contrary, "students who show an attitude of rejection to situations involving a certain level of risk, tend to prefer the stability of paid work for others," adds the new doctor of the Polytechnic.

The thesis also shows evidence of the connection between personal skills and business management "although traditionally entrepreneurship education has not given much relevance to the development of personal skills," says Rosique, who is responsible for the Yuzz Entrepreneurship program. The chair of Banco Santander at the UPCT.

Researchers at the Faculty of Business Sciences have verified the relationship between the attitude towards entrepreneurship and the intention to undertake and have found, only among the men studied, that the search for wealth motivates the entrepreneurs.

Faced with this, the prospects of finding a job reduce the mood for self-employment.

The thesis has also studied the special conditions faced by entrepreneurs of foreign origin.

"They suffer social and financial barriers that deteriorate the performance of the company, being necessary the design of actions that compensate these adverse effects," says Domingo García.

"The lack of information and ignorance of local support mechanisms have a negative effect on the performance of their businesses.

In addition, migrants do not attach much importance to social networks and rely very heavily on traditional sources of finance, such as financial institutions, which results in self-rationing of credit and therefore use their own savings Or resort to informal loans from family and friends, "explains Rosique.
