The foundations of the structure that is to evaluate the biological risks of food safety in Spain are based at the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT), whose group of researchers in Food Safety and Conservation, led by Pablo Fernández Escámez, represents the Dozens of R + D + I teams from all over Spain that are grouped together in a new network of excellence recognized by the state program for the promotion of scientific and technical research excellence.
"Risk assessment is critical to establishing food security in developed countries," says Fernández.
"This network aims to bring together all the actors involved: health authorities, the Spanish Agency of Consumption, Food Safety and Nutrition (Aecosan), industries of the sector and research groups of universities," adds the researcher.
"In collaboration with Aecosan, we will identify food hazards, establish coordination mechanisms and action protocols using the risk prioritization tool," says Fernández.
The transmission of viruses through food and the safety of fresh, ready-to-eat products are among the most recent concerns of this group of researchers.
Another UPCT researcher, José Manuel Ferrández Vicente, and his group of Electronic Design and Signal Processing Techniques, leads another network of excellence, focused on Natural / Artificial Computing Technologies, which was already recognized in the previous call for this Program, in 2014, and now has renewed the certificate of "excellent".
