The Governing Council has approved the expenditure related to the maintenance of the Radiation Oncology equipment of the Hospital Santa Lucía de Cartagena, with a duration of four years and a bidding budget of 2,216,841 euros.
This cancer treatment equipment is equipped with two linear accelerators and brachytherapy equipment, as well as an oncological information system.
The linear accelerator is an electrical device to create a high energy radiation that can be used to treat cancer.
For its part, brachytherapy uses a type of energy called ionizing radiation, to kill cancer cells and reduce tumors.
The contract that is authorized aims to achieve the best state of conservation and ensure the continuous operation of this equipment that includes linear accelerators, minimizing the possible stops as a result of failures.
The Radiation Oncology Service of Santa Lucia hospital received 1,115 new first consultations in 2016. Since its inception, it has provided care to 5,000 patients, of which 60 percent benefit from high-generation treatments.
