The theme of this year's World Water Day, which is celebrated on March 22, centered on the water cycle and its reuse, coincides with the End of Degree Work of a student of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, Clara Teresa Benítez, Which has just been awarded by the Repsol Foundation Chair - UPCT for its proposals to reduce the environmental footprint during the process of potabilization, distribution, sanitation and water purification in the municipality of Alcantarilla.
"The objective was to analyze the possibility of implementing a model of circular economy in the integral cycle of water," explains the graduate in Industrial Chemical Engineering, which received its award during the recent graduation of students from the School of Industrial.
"Sustainable development is a priority for the Repsol Foundation, which is clear that the circular economy must be imposed in the future," says the director of the Chair, Antonio Sánchez Kaiser.
The student proposes in his final work, directed by José Pablo Delgado, measures of use of renewable energies (mini-hydraulics and photovoltaic) under the modality of self-consumption, making energy processes practically self-sufficient.
In addition, energy efficiency measures are proposed in pumps and lighting installations.
In this way, it could reduce the electric network demand by 677,748 kWh, assuming a reduction of more than 80% of its current demand.
It also reduces carbon footprint by up to 71% carbon footprint, due to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
The work also proposes solutions to reduce the water footprint as the placement of floats to avoid the evaporation of water in the raft of water collection in the potabilization station, avoiding the loss of 25,000 cubic meters of water per year.
In total, the new engineer estimates that water efficiency could be improved by 6%.
"The implementation of industrial symbiosis actions would close the cycle of the production process to achieve a zero level of waste, using innovative management technologies and industrial manufacturing," adds the author.
La alumna presented her work, with the help of the Repsol Foundation, at the last National Congress of the Environment.
