Antirrumores Strategy Defines the Lines to End Racial Prejudice in Cartagena (21/03/2017)

This Tuesday, March 21, has presented the Strategy Antirrumores, promoted by the City of Cartagena, in which various municipal departments, social entities and secondary education centers work, in order to make the port city a municipality free of Bullies and racial prejudice.

This initiative aims to facilitate the positive interaction between citizens in contexts of cultural diversity with the ultimate aim of achieving a higher rate of integration.

This has been presented by the mayor of Cartagena, José López, who has been accompanied by the Councilor for the Quality of Life Area, Francisco Calderón;

The delegate of Social Services and Mediation, Carmen Martín, and the coordinator of the program, Damián Pérez.

The mayor has pointed out that the rumor and gossip "have always been widely practiced in Spain" since "there is always an ear willing to listen to privileged information and a voice willing to spread and propagate it, even if it is false."

According to López, these news are "almost always negative, unconfirmed and with an objective or victim", as well as a tool of individuals and groups "to fight the one who thinks differently, looks different or does not allow himself to be drawn by the current of the normal".

In turn, he has lamented that the rumors "can affect all people related to an idea, trend, or social, sexual or religious condition."

Thus, he recalled, "relatively recently, the rumors circulated word of mouth and, although they hurt, its diffusion was slow," although, "now, anyone has a blog, participates in a chat, sends an email without Sender to a list of recipients, generates a waterfall of mail and makes the boogey spread with a speed and reach unthinkable a few years ago.

Faced with this problem, the campaign Antirrumores de Cartagena, which is the sixth municipality in Spain to join this initiative, has been presented this Tuesday, on the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

On this date it is recalled that all people "have the same rights" since "equality and non-discrimination are cornerstones of human rights".

In this global context of fears, misgivings, phobias and lies that always surround the immigrants, the City Council of Cartagena expresses its explicit support and its effort to improve the coexistence and the construction of cohesion Social, "emphasizing diversity through this initiative, which has been recognized as good practice by various institutions such as the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

For his part, Pérez recalled that this initiative has its origin in an experience held in Barcelona in 2010, which was supported financially by the la Caixa Social Welfare, and has already shown that it is "a tool to combat the Stereotypes and social prejudices in any group, "but especially in that of immigrants."

In this sense, the coordinator of the program has ensured that "the rumors are a negative charge that affects people emotionally and that causes an indisposition and discomfort in front of diverse groups and against the minorities" and that " , An error of approach and an ignorance of the reality of the other.

In this way, the strategy seeks to identify all the rumors with negative charge towards the immigrants who circulate in the municipality of Cartagena and that "threaten the pillars of our social coexistence".

Thus, during the year 2015 a study was carried out and, in the course of 2016, different actions were launched to implement this strategy in a deeper way, in areas such as labor, education and social, As a survey that has answered more than 800 users of the municipality, and that has allowed to identify a total of 15 stereotypes and rumors, which include prejudices related to the study aids that immigrants receive, work, crime, terrorism and Religious fanaticism, access to social security and health services, machismo or hygiene.

With this information, the initiative aims to generate "other types of narrations that counteract the negative influence of rumors from the earliest childhood," so it will work especially in the educational field.

To this end, it will focus on working with groups of young people, older people, social groups and entities working with immigrants through different actions in institutes, health centers, social associations and various awareness campaigns.

The coordinator of the program has recognized that from the Department of Social Services "we are excited" with the project, and has ensured that "in about two years, we should start to notice a positive effect in the municipality."

And is that, has the collaboration of associations such as Alraso, Cepaim, Murcia Acoge, Columbares, the Department of Equality, the Department of Education, the Department of Youth, the Department of Sports, the Murcian Health Service and the centers of Work of the Primary Social Services of the municipality.
