The Cartagena Polytechnic University (UPCT), the Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives of Murcia (Fecoam) and the Coordinator of Organizations of Farmers and Cattlemen (COAG) have today constituted the Chair for Sustainable Agriculture in the Field of Cartagena, with the aim of To find technological solutions that allow to make more efficient the use of the water and the fertilizers in the cultures of the Region and that allow the decontamination of the aquifers.
The two main lines of work and research of the Chair will be the saving of water and fertilizers, calculating the exact amount of water needed by the crop and making efficient fertilizers that prevent nutrients from contaminating aquifers or going to watercourses.
The search for technology and methods to eliminate nitrates present in aquifers will be another major goal of researchers and farmers.
Minimizing waste in desalination of water, reducing the impact of slurry, increasing biological control against pests rather than chemical methods, encouraging biodiversity in boundaries and hedges between crops, will also be priorities for the Chair, which already Prepares a day of sustainable agriculture on March 31 in Torre-Pacheco, during the fair Fame Innowa.
The continuous training of the technicians of the cooperatives and agricultural companies, so that they are to the last one in new technologies and methods of production, will be another pillar of the collaboration between the Polytechnic and the agrarian organizations.

"The purpose of this chair is to establish a continuous collaboration between the participating entities to promote research and innovation in the field of agricultural sustainability, as well as to promote actions of theoretical and practical training aimed at professionals in the agricultural sector," commented For his part the president of Fecoam, Santiago Martínez.
