The regional government will contribute 40,000 euros for the restoration of the Chapel of Socorro of the Old Cathedral of Cartagena.
The Minister of Culture and spokesman of the regional government, Noelia Arroyo, and the elder brother of the Illustrious Brotherhood of the Holy and Real Cristo del Socorro of Cartagena, Manuel Martinez, held a meeting today at the Aguirre Palace in which they talked about the works that will begin Soon and during which Arroyo also received the distinction like Sister of Honor of the brotherhood.
The recovery project, which will be financed almost 50 percent by the Community, was presented last summer in the Ministry of Culture and Portavocía and, after being evaluated by the technicians of the General Directorate of Cultural Property, works were authorized for To improve the lining of the external facades of the chapel and to solve the problems of humidity of this property declared of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the year 1931.
Arroyo said that "this collaboration is a further step in the development of the Old Cathedral of Cartagena, an emblematic area of ​​the Region that we want to become a new example of the recovery of our heritage for which we bet from the Government Regional and that will be added to other actions already carried out such as that which has turned the Roman Theater into a cultural and tourist reference or those that will also be executed soon in the city of Cartagena, as the transformation of the Central Cinema into a cultural space of the first order ".
With the preservation and maintenance works planned in the Socorro Chapel, problems will be solved in walls and floors, the dressing room will be conditioned and the wood elements that compose it will be restored.
Also, water will be prevented in the future and the exterior finishes will be improved.
This chapel is the second side of the Epistle of the church of Santa María de Cartagena, known as the Old Cathedral, and is, next to the Chapel of the Four Saints, one of the elements that is best preserved, thanks in part to previous works Repair and restoration.
It is owned by the brotherhood of the same name and was built in 1691 as gratitude for the healing of a son of the Duke of Veragua.
Once restored, "the chapel will be a further attraction for citizens to visit the cathedral."
