The Espacio Mediterráneo commercial center has increased its green surface thanks to the vertical garden that have designed and built students of the Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT).
Half a dozen garden models are hung from today on their main entrance so visitors can rate them for the choice of the final choice.
The initiative is part of the Mediterranean Space Environmental Management Plan in which the UPCT collaborates, whose students from the School of Agronomists have already created and planted a garden of native species in front of which are now hung designs by students of the School of Agriculture Architecture and Building.
"Vertical gardening is a value-added alternative when there is no more surface to plant," explains the professor of Natural Landscape and Urban Jesus Ochoa, who weighs with the mall other proposals of 'urban natura' such as urban gardens or The green roofs.
"We will take into account the opinions of customers through social networks and the sustainability of each of the models to choose the one that is used to cover the entire wall," says Pepa Egea, director of Markéting de Espacio Mediterráneo, a center "Committed to the environment," he says.
The team of students of the winning model will be awarded with 400 euros, while the groups that result in second and third place will receive 200 euros.
The students have made their designs with different recyclable materials and have also chosen the flora species, adapted to the climatic conditions and the orientation of the wall.
"For us it is very important, because for the first time we have built our designs, they have not only stayed in one idea", emphasizes a student.
"The panels are an example of very cheap materials can do very nice things," adds a colleague.
Vertical gardens, which are drip irrigated, cost around 300-400 euros per square meter, estimates Ochoa, who has already proven in the Polytechnic itself the utility of vertical gardens to purify air from offices.
