The mayor of Cartagena, José López, and the councilor of the Area of ​​Archaeological Heritage, Ricardo Segado, visited this Friday the excavations of the Roman Amphitheater.
They have been received by the Director General of Historical Heritage and Archeology, María del Carmen Berrocal, and several technicians who have notified them of the latest developments and explained how they are progressing.
Thus, both the mayor and the alderman have been able to know firsthand the latest news provided by the prospects that are being carried out at the site.
Among them is the confirmation of some findings already documented, such as the start of the minor axis of the amphitheater, which passed below the central zone, whose vaults are in good state of conservation and suggest that in the future could be accessible .
Both ediles have also been able to contemplate the original wall covering the eastern and northern part, which according to the calculations could reach at the time 11'40 meters above the level of the old arena.
It should be noted, as a detail, that this height is approximately the same as the current elevation of the bullring.
In addition to this, Lopez and Segado have inspected the autopsy ward of the former Military Hospital, where it is planned to organize this spring for the Year of Enlightenment, a recreation of the use that was given in the eighteenth century to this room and An exhibition of surgical tools used in the past.
