The recovery facilities at the Cartagena plant have a treatment capacity of 140,000 tonnes per year of waste and have involved an investment of 6 million euros
The Director General of Quality and Environmental Assessment, Encarna Molina, visited today the urban waste treatment plant of the City of Cartagena, located in the place of El Gorguel, initiating a round of visits to all treatment plants and other infrastructure Which are included in the recently approved Waste Plan.
Molina took advantage of the visit to verify the effectiveness of the investments made in the aforementioned plant with Cohesion Funds.
In December 2015, actions to improve classification and biological treatment operations at the plant ended, incorporating the latest technologies and waste segregation systems to increase its recovery capacity and achieve greater efficiency in management Of waste for reuse.
The plant's recovery facilities have a treatment capacity of 140,000 tonnes per year of waste and involved an investment of EUR 6,01 million, funded by the Community, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment and the Fund Cohesion Fund.
The executed projects have the necessary environmental certifications including the Declaration of non-affection to Red Natura.
Regarding the condition of another part of the facilities of Licharsa to the SPA of the Sierra de la Fausilla, thanks to the works of adaptation of the cartography of the spaces of the Natura Network realized in the year 2010 is known that, due to the Important technical limitations of the previous cartography that lacked precision, would have occupied 4,5 hectares of this protected space in the zone of contact with the public facilities.

Improvements
The investments made in the installation have made it possible to improve the selection of recoverable materials from the waste treatment line collected from the containers, such as paper, cardboard, plastic containers, bricks, glass containers and metals.
With this modernization of the infrastructure, the material recovery capacity has been increased by around 8 percentage points, in relation to the one existing before the investments, which also means an increase in the useful life of the disposal vessels by decreasing the rejection.
The construction of a ship for the treatment of organic matter allows to reduce by 1,072 cubic meters per year the generation of leachates, improving the conditions of exploitation of the infrastructure.
Waste plan
The Waste Plan of the Region of Murcia 2016-2020 was approved by agreement of Governing Council, last December 28, 2016, thus fulfilling the mandate established in the law on waste and contaminated soils.
It adapts to the state planning in this matter.
The Plan sets out the necessary measures to facilitate the reuse, recycling, recovery and disposal of waste, so as to achieve the ecological objectives set by the EU by 2020.
It is intended that the Region can ensure that recyclable fractions of domestic and commercial waste, such as paper, metals, glass, plastics and bio-waste, reach a total of at least 50 percent by weight, The limit of 35 percent of the discharge of the total municipal waste generated.
The Plan has a total investment forecast of more than 50 million euros, co-financed by the Cohesion Fund (actions already carried out) and by the ERDF (those planned until the end of the period in 2020).
For the financial year 2017 there is an endowment of 6.8 million euros.
