The Roman Theater Museum honors the figure of Emilia Paula with an exhibition (13/02/2017)

The exhibition 'Emilia Paula, the Roman woman in the festivities', which can be visited until March 27 at the Museum of the Roman Theater in Cartagena, pays homage to the Roman woman, through the photographs by Juan José Ruiz Montoya And Juan Rodríguez Álvarez, a tour of various festive women who have given life to Emilia Paula.

For them it has been a privilege to have incarnated the daughter of the Consul Lucio Emilio Paulo and consort of the General who changed the course of History, Publio Cornelio Scipio.

An unforgettable and unrepeatable experience, full of magical moments and emotion.

The photographs of Juan José Ruiz Montoya and Juan Rodríguez Álvarez, performed at the Teatro Romano, bring us closer to the festive women who have represented Emilia Paula, and evoke the emotion of those women who have embodied the character.

At the inauguration of the exhibition, which was held on Friday, February 10, a representation of the municipal government was attended in which the mayor, José López;

The councilor delegate of Culture, David Martinez, the councilor delegate of Finance, Isabel García;

And the delegate councilor of Portal and Office of Transparency, María José Soler.

THE FIGURE OF EMILIA PAULA

Emilia Paula, wife of General Publio Cornelius Scipio, represents the ideal of a Roman matron, is said to have a kind disposition and showed unwavering loyalty to her husband, was the youngest daughter of the consul of Rome, Lucio Emilio Paulo, died in 216 BC fighting Hannibal at the Battle of Cannas.

From the marriage with Publio Cornelio Scipio 'the African' were born three children: Publio Cornelio Scipio, Cornelia Maior and Cornelia Minor.

His daughter, Cornelia Minor married Tiberio Sempronio Graco and was the mother of the two famous tribunes of the plebs: Tiberius and Gaius Graco.

Emilia Paula enjoyed a freedom and fortune unusual for her time thanks to the liberal mood of her husband, and served as an example to many women in Rome.

She had to dedicate part of her life to the care and administration of family property, but also to the education of her children, she participated in the social life of her husband and perhaps accompanied him in some of his military campaigns.

She survived the Roman general and her son, dying to the year 162 before our era, at the age of seventy.

EMILIA PAULA IN THE FESTIVALS OF CARTHAGINESES AND ROMANS

Since 1998 Emilia Paula's character has been incorporated as a relevant figure in the Carthaginian and Roman Festivals, where one of the most momentous events of Ancient History, the Second Punic War, is revived, taking as a point of support the history and archeology of Cartagena.

Emilia Paula and the Bona Dea group participate in the main events such as the lighting of the Sacred Fire, the Dies Lustricus, the Latin Fair, the tribute to the fallen Romans, the great Victoria parade, but they also work all year round For the promotion of our holidays.

The exhibition is completed with an audiovisual presentation with Spanish and English subtitles.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Juan Rodríguez and Juan José Ruiz are two great passionate photographers, both shared the exhibition of the Carnaval group 'Ipanema' in 2016.

Juan José Ruiz has focused his love of photography in immortalizing different festivals in our city.

In addition to collaborating with the digital newspaper Cartagenadehoy, she has made several exhibitions, including '28 Momentos Carthagineses 'in 2013,' The Color of Holy Week in Cartagena 'in 2014,' The beginnings of contemporary settlement in La Algameca Chica Of Cartagena 'in 2015 or' unforgettable moments of Carthaginians and Romans' in 2015, among others.
