The Rescue Coordination Center (CCS) in Cartagena, under the Ministry of Development, coordinated the rescue, assistance or search of 1,624 people in the 259 marine actions served in 2016.
The CCS Cartagena attended 226 emergencies related to maritime rescue, 29 with maritime safety and 4 with the protection of the environment.
The total number of vessels involved amounted to 202, of which 144 corresponded to recreational craft emergencies, 16 to merchant ships and 6 to fishing vessels.
The remaining 36 cases were related to other types of ships or floating artifacts, including pateras.
The actions in which they have not been involved ships correspond to assists of different types to people in difficulties: falls to the sea, rescue in cliffs, etc.
Regarding the actions related to immigration, the CCS Cartagena rescued 246 people from 26 boats.
On the other hand, from the CCS in Cartagena 12,881 ships were controlled in the entrances and exits of port.
Maritime Rescue Activity in 2016 throughout Spain
Maritime rescue coordinated the rescue, assistance or search of 17,921 people (an average of 49 a day) in the 5,693 maritime actions (more than 15 on average per day) served throughout Spain throughout 2016, which 4% over the previous year.
Most of the activity in 2016 was related to the rescue of lives at sea - in particular 4,478 actions - another 743 interventions aimed at ensuring maritime safety and 472 related to the protection of the marine environment.
Implied vessels
In the 5,693 emergencies attended, 4,018 vessels were involved (60% pleasure boats, 14% fishing vessels and 10% merchants).
The remaining 16% corresponds to other types of vessels, among which are the pateras.
The rest of the actions in which no vessels have been involved (1,829 out of a total of 5,693) correspond to assistance in recreational activities such as surfing, windsurfing or diving, as well as falling people to the sea from land, rescue on cliffs, etc.
Irregular immigration
In addition, Salvamento Marítimo rescued 6,726 people from the 464 boats in which it coordinated assistance throughout Spain.
Control of maritime traffic
On the other hand, the total number of vessels controlled by the 20 Maritime Rescue Centers has been 318,070, of which 149,444 correspond to vessels identified as passing through the Traffic Separation Devices of Finisterre, Tarifa and Cabo de Gata and the Canary Islands Eastern and Western.
The other 168,626 vessels were controlled at the entrances / exits of Spanish ports.
