The Department of Culture receives the Lechuza Prize for its fight for Equality (30/01/2017)

The Councilor delegate of Culture, Education and Equality, David Martinez, gathered this Saturday the 'Lechuza Prize' with which the Association '+ Women' has awarded his area for the work done to achieve a balanced presence of women and Men in the cultural offer of Cartagena.

The act of delivery was celebrated in the celebration of the Lechuza and Topo Awards.

In the first year of existence of this recognition, the '+ Mujeres' Association, a collective that promotes the equality of women in culture, has decided to award the 'Lechuza Prize' 2017 to the Council of Culture, Education and Equality of the City of Cartagena, given that according to the basis of this award, the same is granted to "institutions, agencies and / or persons who, in the performance of their social work and through the actions they perform, contribute to equality between women and men."

The prize consists of a drawing by Argentine graphic artist and comedian Diana Raznovich.

In the official communication of this concession you can read: "Since '+ Women' we want to recognize with this distinction the work of the Department of Culture of Cartagena, in collaboration with the Department of Equality and other municipal areas, and since the year 2015, promotes the balanced presence of women and men in the artistic and cultural public offer ".

Likewise, the resolution adds that this area serves as "an example for other institutions".

The cultural programming of Cartagena, in which neither sex is represented by over 60%, is 'Read, think, imagine' and the festivals 'Mucho Más Mayo' and 'Deslindes'

The equal presence of women and men in these cultural programs is a clear sign that equality is a matter of political will and social commitment.

These qualities, in turn, are necessary so that the artistic and intellectual production of women has the same space and visibility as in the case of men, without having to lift the flight in conditions of inequality.

For this reason, David Martinez promised to collect the award for the next edition of the Cartagena Jazz Festival and La Mar de Músicas to fulfill in their selection process and contracting with the Law of Parity, so in neither of these two programs Artists and male groups will exceed 60% of the total.

About the character and denomination of this prize, the group '+ Mujeres' notes that, "linked from mythology with sagacity and wisdom, the owl, with eyes that penetrate the darkness, can lift the flight when falling This is a capacity that women have had to develop in the face of the conditions of inequality of a patriarchal culture that has explicitly and implicitly hampered the recognition of their artistic, cultural and scientific creations, so that they have not counted on The same opportunities for promotion as men, "and adds:" For us, the owl symbolizes this ability.
