Victoria Cave brings together about 80 people in the second guided tour organized by the Council of Archaeological Heritage (30/01/2017)

Last Saturday, January 28, the second guided visit to the site of Cueva Victoria took place, which was attended by numerous people who met to know firsthand one of the oldest and most historic corners of the municipality , Organized by the Department of Archaeological Heritage and the Municipal Archaeological Museum,.

The visit was guided by the Municipal Coordinator of Historic Patrimony of the City Council, Mari Carmen Berrocal, and by the expert speleologist and collaborator in the excavation of Victoria Caves, Andrés Ros.

The public, which had previously reserved a place in the Municipal Archaeological Museum for free, made a tour of the interior of this cavity, approaching the geological and mining processes that created it as it is today.

About eighty people of all ages, organized into two groups, directly visualized paleo-Pleistocene remains that show the presence of large animals such as mammoths, deer, horses, bears or saber-toothed tigers, that inhabited the Mar Menor environment. 900,000 years.

Nearly ninety different species of animals of mainly African origin that were hunted by hyenas that had their cubil in the natural cave of Victory Cave, as evidenced by the teeth of milk and excrements appeared in the deposit.

After the visit, Berrocal assured that "it has been a great success of public".

The visit to Cueva Victoria is complemented by the exhibition 'Out of Africa' at the Municipal Archaeological Museum, which can be visited until February 15.

CONDITIONING WORK ON THE STATION

During the last months, the Department of Archaeological Heritage, directed by Ricardo Segado, has been developing various works of conditioning in Cueva Victoria with the intention of making it visitable for small groups.

In this way, Segado, together with Mari Carmen Berrocal, has held meetings with those responsible for the Sierra Minera Foundation to give a boost to the recovery of this deposit so important for the municipality.

The mayor, Jose López, first hand knowledge of the state of Cueva Victoria in the visit that took place on January 3.
