This Sunday was celebrated on the steps of the Tail of the Whale of the port and on the neighboring esplanade an act of homage to the people died at sea during 2016 in the migratory migration of the Mediterranean.
This initiative, which has been collaborating with the port city council for several years, was organized and convened by various entities such as the international movement Círculo de Silencio, with presence in Cartagena, AlRaso, Accem, Association of Malians, Botica del libro, Cepaim, Intercultural Circle, Columbares, Red Cross, La Huertecica, Murcia Acoge, or Rascasa.
Consequently, as a result of this collaboration of the municipal government team through the Department of Social Services and Immigration, the commemoration were joined on behalf of the Consistory, among others, the mayor of Cartagena, José López and the delegate councilor of Social Services and Social Mediation, Carmen Martín del Amor.
Before the beginning of the event, which involved several entities and associations to help immigrants and refugees in the city and the Region, a female march led by a banner with the motto 'Mujeres en Movement 'that moved to the esplanade to finally adhere to the meeting.
The women of the organizing associations carried in the displacement cards with different phrases of denunciation.
In this area were held various acts such as the reading of manifests, poems and phrases that summarized the hardships of displaced people;
Musical performances by Ghanaian and Malian groups;
Or first-person accounts of immigrant experiences.
In addition, there was a minute of silence, a small exhibition of 'Botica del libro', posters and photos in memory of the 5545 dead that the sea has claimed in 2016 in the Mediterranean, images that portrayed the drama of immigration and Refugees, as well as a recreation of the scene encountered by women and men who are forced to cross the waters, with life vests, black sacks, thermal blankets, remnants of nets and woods.
A simulation of a border fence with ropes and wires was also constructed, in which were rests of clothes, shoes, empty backpacks, papers, etc.
And ended up breaking symbolically at the end of the act at the end of the reading of the poem "What would happen?" By Mario Benedetti, who closed the ceremony.
During the tribute also flowers were thrown to the sea in memory of the victims drowned in its waters
