Researchers from the Department of Graphic Expression of the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena (UPCT) have succeeded in patenting a procedure to detect keratoconus in its preclinical phase, it is a disease whose development in its clinical phase affects the human cornea and which involves a progressive Loss of visual quality, leading to the most advanced phase of total loss of vision, which necessitates a transplant of the cornea.
The patent, called 'Procedure and system for detecting subclinical keratoconus', has been the result of the research work carried out by UPCT researchers Francisco Cavas Martínez, Francisco José Fernández Cañavate, Daniel García and José Nieto, together with the group R & D of the Vissum Clinic (Alicante) led by the Professor of Ophthalmology of the Miguel Hernández University Dr. Jorge L. Alió and Professor of the University of Murcia, Dr. Ernesto de la Cruz.
The patent has been funded with the Support for Transfer of R & D Results (TRANSFER-UPCT-2014).
"We are very satisfied, this patent is a recognition of the intense work we have done," said Francisco José Fernández, one of the inventors of the procedure, who also said that there are already several companies interested in its exploitation.
The tissues that make up the corneal structure are deformed in this disease, modifying the thickness of the layers that compose it and thus altering the patients' visual capacity.
The patented procedure is based on the use of computational geometry for the reconstruction of this biological structure, using the same surface modeling techniques that are currently used in mechanical engineering design.
Once the cornea has been modeled by these methods, they have proposed different geometric parameters that allow to faithfully diagnose this disease in its different stages.
