After more than twenty years, Cartagena once again has an Equality Council.
This was affirmed by the Councilor for Equality, David Martinez, during the act of constitution, on Thursday 22 December, at the Palace Council, of the general assembly of the Council of Equality that will work to promote equal policies between men and women in the municipality.
The mayor of Cartagena, José López, has chaired the general assembly in which the Equality Council has been established, which will be chaired today by Equality Councilor David Martinez.
At this meeting the Councilor for Social Services, Carmen Martín, has been elected vice-president of the council.
The Equality Council, according to Lopez, will be a maximum body for democratic participation of women in the municipality of Cartagena and social bodies and entities that are committed to promoting the principles of non-discrimination of the sexes.
In addition, the council will have citizen participation because, for the President of the Council, equality belongs to everyone and that is why it must be treated in a transversal way.
CHALLENGES OF THE EQUALITY COUNCIL
The mayor of Equality has commented on the challenges facing the Council, including the development of a new Equality Plan, according to Martinez, is fundamental because the City had only one and now the times have changed.
Gender violence is another fundamental issue for the mayor who has expressed his willingness to work against machismo.
