The Museum of the Roman Theater of Cartagena will offer the possibility of celebrating Christmas as a family with a very special visit, which will reveal how the Romans celebrated the feasts of the Saturnites, which coincide in time with our Christmas.
In the Feliz Navidad activity, Bona Saturnalia, the visitors will begin with the reception of the group by the hand of one of our guides, who will transfer to the public the traditions and customs of the festivities of the Saturnalia.
Then, the tour of the Museum Rooms will be held, where more details of the feasts of Augustus himself will be discovered, to whom he was enthusiastic about making gifts of the most diverse in the Saturnales.
The activity will end at the Teatro Romano, where we propose to sing a carol and try the acoustics of the building.
The Saturnalia were celebrated in honor of Saturn, god of agriculture.
They began on December 17 with a festive public banquet (lectisternium) and, to the large cry of "Io, Saturnalia" candles (cerei) were lit to celebrate the end of the darkest period of the year and the birth of the new light period.
These Roman festivities were celebrated with great banquets and it was traditional to make gifts like candles, clay figurines, sachets with nuts or even money.
The typical dessert that was eaten during these celebrations were the scones with honey, inside was hidden a "bean".
The fortunate one who had the "bean" in his bollito was crowned like "Princeps Saturnalicius", and the others had to obey its orders.
All this and more you will discover during the family visit.
