The Community has been awarded the Grand Central Cinema of Cartagena in the auction held on Wednesday afternoon Altamira, the real estate subsidiary of Banco Santander.
The formalization of the purchase, which will take place in the coming weeks, will give way to studies and works to convert it into a cultural space and recover this property for the enjoyment of all citizens after it closes its doors to the public in the year 2000.
The Minister of Culture and regional government spokeswoman, Noelia Arroyo, said that "we have set the goal of converting the old cinema into a cultural space of the highest order and artistic reference in the Region."
"Cartagena is a priority for the regional government and the commitment to acquire and rehabilitate the Grand Central Cinema is a sign of this," said the minister.
The building was built in 1880 by Carlos Mancha and its original use was for a market.
In 1916, it began to be used for cultural purposes, and it is the oldest building in the Region dedicated to the exhibition of films.
In 1925 it was reformed by Lorenzo Ros and everything seems to indicate that, after important works that were realized in the front of the patio of seats in 1953, the original screen and the original scene is hidden, what would turn it into one of the cinematographic jewels to Nacional level.
"The possibilities offered by the space, once rehabilitated, are numerous, from exhibition halls, theater, concerts, spaces for alternative arts or the holding of congresses and social events," said Arroyo.
The recovery of the Gran Cine Central as a cultural space will contribute to the revitalization of this area of Cartagena, which already has other reference facilities such as the Regional Museum of Modern Art, which will close this year tripling its number of visitors, and the Palacio de Aguirre , Headquarters of the regional government in the city and one of the most important and best preserved modernist buildings in Cartagena.
Before bidding on the property of the Great Central Cinema, technicians of the Community did a study on the state of the building, which has a degree of protection 1, fixing its value and establishing the bid made by the Ministry of Finance and Public Administration for its acquisition.
